Abstract:
This essay explores how illegal drugs are linked to imprisonment, especially in the United States. First, the chapter considers statistics that demonstrate how the high U.S. imprisonment rate is driven by the criminalization of substance misuse, despite the high incidence of drug use in the general population. Prison populations that include a mixture of drug users and drug dealers are virtually guaranteed to find ways of bringing drugs into prison, and the demand is increased by the desire to ease the pains of imprisonment. The illicit drug economy in prisons and the associated violence is a

On 16 January 2014, Ohio prisoner Dennis McGuire was put to death with an untested mixture of lethal injection drugs. According to witnesses, McGuire gasped, snorted and appeared to struggle for air for ten minutes before dying. The entire execution lasted up to twenty-six minutes – the longest since Ohio resumed executions in 1999. McGuire’s family is suing the state and the drug manufacturer Hospira for what they claim was ‘unnecessary and extreme pain and suffering during the execution process’, amounting to cruel and unusual punishment.

Abstract:
There are few more intriguing problems in the history of consumption than that of how cultural barriers to the transmission of foods and drugs have been traversed or broken. Environmental change is a crucial part of the background of global exchanges of food and drugs. The process we have come to know as ‘the Columbian exchange’ of the last half-millennium made it possible to transplant crops to new climates, by a mixture of adaptation and accident. Shifts of religion can also play a big part. This article discusses the global exchange of food and drugs. After briefly considering imperialism a
