Magister Artium (Child and Family Studies) - MA(CFS)<br>Self-Determination Theory is a theory of motivation that aims to explain individuals' goal directed behaviour. Grade 11 learners are naturally in a stage of pursuing certain life goals and aspirations in the process of completing their schooling careers. Often the circumstances or environment provide the opportunities for individuals to be motivated towards aspiring to their life goals. Parents are key role players in either enhancing or hindering the motivation for children to be goal directed. This study examined the association of pare

Recent statistics indicate an alarmingly high proportion of obesity and eating disorder symptomatology in the Canadian population, despite the abundance of informative messages about healthy eating and weight management. This study explores information framing as a communication strategy. Twelve informative articles were created, each one framing one of two types of goals (intrinsic or extrinsic). Female participants (N=59) were asked to choose two to four of the 12 articles, read and evaluate them. It was hypothesized that women would choose articles that are concordant with their own goals,

Log-linear analysis was the primary analytic technique, supplemented by factor analysis where appropriate. The topic is not new. With graduation approaching, high school seniors must consider four major decision areas: further education, employment, marriage, and/or parenthood. Yet, each of these is increasingly problematic within the context of a Post-Industrial society. These decision areas are in fact inextr

Abstract:
According to the dual valuing process model (Grouzet, 2013), the social context can either facilitate the natural human tendency to pursue intrinsic goals, or thwart it by promoting extrinsic goals. Congruent with this idea, research in self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 2000) suggests that parental autonomy support (PAS) is associated with the development of intrinsic goals, whereas more controlling parenting styles, such as conditional regard (PCR), are expected to facilitate extrinsic goals.
