Abstract:
The evaporation and heat transfer of thin liquid film are crucial factors affecting on the heat transfer performance of boiling bubbles or slugs. For boiling in micro-channels, the flash evaporation of the liquid film may give rise to boiling instability, and the dry-out of the film leads to serious deterioration of the heat transport. The thin liquid film has multi-scale transitions, and hence the phase change and fluid dynamics need to be solved by special governing equations and numerical algorithm. The numerical studies to date have solved the steady state distribution of the film, but the

Abstract:
The article presents Polish-German film relations in the framework of Nazis cultural diplomacy between 1933 and 1939. The Nazi effort to create a cultural hegemony through the unification of the European film market under German leadership serves as an important point of reference. On the example of the Polish-German relationship, the article analyses the Nazi “soft power” in terms of both its strength and limits. Describing the broader geopolitical context, the article proposes a new trail in the research on both the film milieus and the cinema culture in Poland in the 1930s. In mythological

Full text
Abstract:
Conventional radiography has been the accepted nondestructive examination (NDT) method used for many years to either "accept" or "reject" a field weld in the pipeline industry. The cost of conventional radiography, however, increasingly has become a major concern in the cost effectiveness of laying new pipelines. The contributing factors to the high cost of conventional radiography are the costs of film and of the chemicals and manpower used to develop the film. Over the last few years, a newer approach to performing radiographic testing has been perfected. Called "real-time radiography," it u

Abstract:
Increasing productivity is generally considered to be the only sustainable way of improving living standards in the long term. The Brazilian economy has had periods of strong growth, particularly until 2010, but the country has performed poorly in terms of aggregate productivity. The federal government has implemented many programs aimed at boosting firm growth and fostering competitiveness in Brazilian industries, though knowledge about their results to date is scarce. This study provides an overview of various Brazilian programs of firm support — including productive finance, business consul

Full text
Abstract:
According to the current standard specifications and special provisions within the Illinois Department of Transportation, four quality assurance (QA) parameters are used to assess acceptability to remain in place for hot-mix asphalt (HMA) construction projects. However, when these parameters fall outside acceptable limits, it is not clear what impact this has on the pavement service life. This report, therefore, conducted a thorough literature review of studies on QA parameters and their effects on pavement service life and studied the standard specifications of each state to determine what th

Abstract:
After a protracted period of financial deepening following a financial crisis at the end of the 20th century, the ratio of corporate bank loans to GDP in Colombia stagnated between 2016 and 2019. In this paper, we explore if firms have substituted bank loans for other financial instruments or if there has been a deleveraging process. From a longer-term growth perspective, we also aim to investigate whether fast-growing firms differ from others in terms of their financial leverage. We find that the decline in the ratio of bank corporate loans to GDP is related to a substitution of funding sourc

Firms in global value chains (GVCs) are granular and exert bargaining power over the terms of trade. We show that these features are crucial to understanding the well-established variation in prices and pass-through across importers and exporters. We develop a novel theory of prices in GVCs, which tractably nests a wide range of bilateral concentration and bargaining power configurations. We test and evaluate the models predictions using a novel dataset merging transaction-level U.S. import data with balance sheet data for both U.S. importers and foreign exporters. Abstract:
This edition of the Caribbean Economics Quarterly focuses on the issue of long-term economic growth. As economies have recovered from the pandemic, the main question is: Will the region return to the slow long-run growth of the pre-pandemic period? The key lies in innovation and productivity. To understand the challenges facing businesses to innovate and increase productivity, the authors draw on recent firm-level data from the Compete Caribbean Partnership Facilitys Innovation, Firm Performance and Gender (IFPG) survey. This edition starts with an overview of past performance of Caribbean cou

This paper presents an endogenous growth general equilibrium model (EGGEM) of firm dynamics and innovative investment for the Spanish economy that allows the medium-term effects of economic policies and shocks to be better understood. The model is calibrated using both aggregate and firm-level data. It is then used to assess the medium-term macroeconomic consequences of the different components of the Next Generation EU (NGEU) programme, including public investment, private capital transfers and innovative investment transfers. The Sunshine Coast (unless otherwise specified, Sunshine Coast refers to the region which includes both Sunshine Coast and Noosa council areas) is a classic regional hotspot. In many respects, the Sunshine Coast has assets that make it the “Goldilocks” of Queensland hotspots: “the agility of the region and our collaborative nature is facilitated by the fact that we're not too big, not too small - 330,000 people” (Paddenburg, 2019); “We are in that perfect little bubble of just right of about everything” (Erbacher 2019). The Sunshine Coast has one of the fastest-growing economies in Australia.

Abstract:
In this paper we analyze changes in the export mix of Chilean firms, looking particularly at differences between large firms and SMEs. To do that, we use detailed information of exported products by firms during the period 1995-2005. Our econometric results, which look at the impact of export product churning on firm performance, are heterogeneous by type of change inexport mix and by firm size. In general, export mix changes are associated with improvements on productivity, although our results suggest that this positive effect is only for SMEs. In terms of employment and sales, we find that
