Abstract:
Learning a spoken language is, in part, an input-driven process. However, the relevant units of speech like words or morphemes are not clearly marked in the speech input. This thesis explores some possible strategies to segment fluent speech. Two main strategies for segmenting fluent speech are considered. The first involves computing the distributional properties of the input stream. Previous research has established that adults and infants can use the transition probabilities (TPs) between syllables to segment speech. Specifically, researchers have found a preference for syllabic sequences w

Using Delayed Auditory Feedback can be used to induce Stutterlike dysfluencies, causing an individual to lose speech fluency. Little is known about the effect of speech dysfluency on working memory and phonological coding. The present study focuses on finding a method that can be used to measure these effects in otherwise fluent adults. 7 adults who normally speak fluently are subjected to Delayed Auditory Feedback during a Reading Span Task. The method proved too weak to induce speech dysfluency in a majority of participants, indicating that the phenomenon is more complex than anticipated.

However, there is a paucity of research on its application to speakers of Chinese whose grammar is very different from English. In the past, the efficacy of RET was mostly measured with speech fluency indexes, little has been mentioned about its effects on semantic-lexical aspects. Therefore, we used lexical diversity, a semantic measure, to document the treatment efficacy of the training program. In brief, the purpose of th

Dupla diplomação com a Universidade Tecnológica e Federal do Paraná<br>The present work presents a study across the effects of fire in nonloadbering Light- Steel Frame (LSF) walls. Eight experimental tests and twenty-two parametric analyses were performed to evaluate the influence the thickness of the cavity, the thickness of the structural steel, the effect of the protection layer and the influence of insulation material in the cavity. The thickness of the protection layer presents the bigger influence in fire resistance, followed by the effect of the insulation material in the cavity. F

The Long Endurance Electric Unmanned Air Vehicle (LEEUAV) is a project of a green, low-cost, small footprint electric solar UAV which was designed for civilian surveillance applications, such as coast, forest, or border patrol. Therefore, long endurance is desired, which is accomplished by a lightweight airframe design and an electric propulsion system assisted with solar cell arrays. The LEEUAV has an approximated mass of 5 kg, 4.5 m of wingspan and an 8-hour flight endurance. To ease the construction, its wing, in addition to its aerodynamic function, must accommodate the solar cells on its
