The Instruction of Catherine II (the Nakaz, 1767) represented an original attempt of the Russian supreme power to introduce certain ideas of the European Enlightenment into the practice of national legislation. The ‘philosophical’ origins of the Nakaz, which incorporated broad borrowings from Western eighteenth-century thinkers, ensured the empress’s work a place among the most liberal texts of the Russian Enlightenment and promoted its spread beyond borders. This paper describes a study designed to investigate the effect of Classical and Romance vocabulary on the English lexicon. The study involved a series of computer searches, using the CD-ROM version of the Oxford English Dictionary (1989). Our aim was to discover how many and at what point in time words were borrowed into English from Greek, Latin, French, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese. The paper describes the general obstacles and limitations — both with the Oxford English Dictionary and the computer searches — that circumscribe our results. This article argues that European vernaculars were in closer contact with one another and with languages spoken outside Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries than they had been in the Middle Ages, when Latin dominated written communication. Increased contact led to borrowing, mixing and hybridization, some of it highly self-conscious (as in the case of ‘macaronic’ poetry and drama). Mixing in turn led to a ‘purist’ reaction, first in the case of Latin and then in the case of vernaculars such as Italian, French, German, Dutch and even – to a lesser extent – English.
