During vertebrate embryogenesis, the planar cell polarity (PCP) signalling pathway is responsible for cell movements essential for convergent extension during gastrulation, neural tube closure, neural crest cell migration, and heart morphogenesis. It carries a trinucleotide CAG repeat that encodes polyglutamine (polyQ) at an evolutionarily conserved NH2-terminal position in exon 1. The origin and migration of cardiovascular progenitors have been identified using multiple cell fate mapping techniques monitoring marked epiblast cells through time at carefully defined stages of early gastrulation.
