Fetuses with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) have high concentrations of catecholamines, which lowers the insulin secretion and glucose uptake. Here, we studied the effect of hypercatecholaminemia on glucose metabolism in sheep fetuses with placental insufficiency-induced IUGR. Norepinephrine concentrations are elevated throughout late gestation in IUGR fetuses but not in IUGR fetuses with a bilateral adrenal demedullation (IAD) at 0.65 of gestation. Euglycemic (EC) and hyperinsulinemic–euglycemic (HEC) clamps were performed in control, intact-IUGR, and IAD fetuses at 0.87 of gestation.

Ground Penetrating Radar is a tool for mapping the subsurface in a noninvasive way. The radar instrument transmits electromagnetic waves and records the resulting scattered field. Unfortunately, the data from a survey can be hard to interpret, and this holds extra true for non-experts in the field. The data are also usually in 2.5D, or pseudo 3D, meaning that the vast majority of the scanned volume is missing data. Interpolation algorithms can, however, approximate the missing data, and the result can be visualized in an application and in this way ease the interpretation. This report has focu

Ground Penetrating Radar is a widely used technique for detecting objects in the subsurface. However, the objects typically appear as hyperbolic curves in the raw data's time domain. Therefore, the size and the location of the objects are hard to interpret from the raw data. Migration is a helpful technique to determine the subsurface velocity and to transform the raw data into an image where the object's size and location are easier to interpret. In this thesis, we discuss a strategy for automatic migration. We apply the automatic strategy with a few standard migration methods, Kirchhoff, Pha

Abstract:
Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is a nondestructive geophysical technique used to create images of the subsurface. A major limitation of GPR is that a subject matter expert (SME) needs to post-process and interpret the data, limiting the technique’s use. Post-processing is time-intensive and, for detailed processing, requires proprietary software. The goal of this study is to develop automated GPR post-processing software, compatible with Geophysical Survey Systems, Inc. (GSSI) data, in open-source R programming. This would eliminate the need for an SME to process GPR data, remove proprietary s

Abstract:
Geopolitical risks and tensions are nowadays regularly presented by policymakers and analysts as key conditioning factors of economic activity in both the short and the medium-run. Widely accepted operational measures of geopolitical risks tend to be based on counting the number of newspaper articles related to adverse geopolitical events, in particular following the ground-breaking paper of Caldara and Iacoviello (2022) in which they build their Geopolitical Risk (GPR) indexes. In this paper we propose one avenue to make further progress in the measurement of such risks. We provide a decompos

Abstract:
The National Science Foundation operates stations on the ice sheets of Antarctica and Greenland to investigate Earth’s climate history, life in extreme environments, and the evolution of the cosmos. Understandably, logistics costs predominate budgets due to the remote locations and harsh environments involved. Currently, manual ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys must preceed vehicle travel across polar ice sheets to detect subsurface crevasses or other voids. This exposes the crew to the risks of undetected hazards. We have developed an autonomous rover, Yeti, specifically to conduct GPR s

Abstract:
The McMurdo shear zone (MSZ) is strip of heavily crevassed ice oriented in the south-north direction and moving northward. Previous airborne surveys revealed a chaotic crevasse structure superimposed on a set of expected crevasse orientations at 45 degrees to the south-north flow (due to shear stress mechanisms). The dynamics that produced this chaotic structure are poorly understood. Our purpose is to present our field methodology and provide field data that will enable validation of models of the MSZ evolution, and here, we present a method for deriving a local velocity field from ground pen

Abstract:
We present a Python-based multi-fidelity tool to estimate rotorcraft performance metrics. We use Gaussian-Process regression (GPR) methods to adaptively build a surrogate model using a small number of high-fidelity CFD points to improve estimates of performance metrics from a medium-fidelity comprehensive analysis model. To include GPR methods in our framework, we used the EmuKit Python package. Our framework adaptively chooses new high-fidelity points to run in regions where the model variance is high. These high-fidelity points are used to update the GPR model; convergence is reached when mo
