Ground Penetrating Radar is a tool for mapping the subsurface in a noninvasive way. The radar instrument transmits electromagnetic waves and records the resulting scattered field. Unfortunately, the data from a survey can be hard to interpret, and this holds extra true for non-experts in the field. The data are also usually in 2.5D, or pseudo 3D, meaning that the vast majority of the scanned volume is missing data. Ground Penetrating Radar is a widely used technique for detecting objects in the subsurface. However, the objects typically appear as hyperbolic curves in the raw data's time domain. Therefore, the size and the location of the objects are hard to interpret from the raw data. Bibliography: leaves 53-55.<br>Subsurface object detection has mainly been carried out using conventional ground penetrating radar (OPR) techniques, which use a single receiving antenna from which a number of range profiles (known as ""A Scope"" images) are assembled to form a two-dimensional data field (known as a ""B Scope"" image). These OPR systems have difficulties with high clutter level, surface reflections, limited ground penetration and the required fine resolution. The resolution in the across track and along track directions is limited by the physical aperture in these directions.

Neste trabalho foi realizado um levantamento GPR 4D em laboratório no qual foi simulado o vazamento de óleo de uma ETD - Estação de Transmissão e Distribuição de Energia Elétrica. Os estudos consistiram em derramar 15 litros de óleo em três experimentos: tanque contendo areia seca, tanque contendo areia úmida mais gradiente hidráulico e tanque contendo areia úmida. Em todos os experimentos o objetivo foi detectar a pluma de contaminação e avaliar a migração desse óleo com o tempo. Os dados GPR 4D foram adquiridos utilizando-se uma antena blindada de 400 MHz modelo SIR-3000 equipamento da GSSI.

Inexpensive non-destructive techniques for mapping and imaging infrastructure and defects are an integral component of maintenance. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is a widely-used non-destructive tool for locating buried infrastructure and for imaging rebar and other features of interest to civil engineers. As these cast iron pipes were traditionally directly buried into local soil, where the soil is chemically aggressive (as in the case of some clays) corrosion of the pipes often occurs due to an electrochemical process, which both changes the pH environment and releases iron ions into the clay.
