Open access (OA) and the broad sharing of research outputs has been empirically shown to accelerate scientific progress and benefit society and individuals at scale through improved health outcomes, socioeconomic mobility, and environmental well-being, to name a few. Academic research libraries, for their part, have made significant investments in opening up research and scholarship—particularly research conducted on their campuses and made available through journal subscriptions. Yet these investments are difficult to collect given their distribution across many budget lines, the lack of stan

The Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021 (the Code) recognises the challenges our student population can face (New Zealand Qualifications Authority [NZQA], 2021). It is in place to support the wellbeing and safety of learners studying with a New Zealand education provider. In line with the Code, universities across New Zealand are looking at ways to support the mental health and wellbeing of our tertiary students. Development of the Student Wellbeing Connect (SWBC) service was a response to increased student support needs in the initial stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Due to the government-imposed restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic, students often faced complex psychosocial and wellbeing issues (Dodd et al., 2021). Two years on from its inception, the case management service has become a core component of La Trobe University’s Student Health, Wellbeing and Inclusion services responding to the complex and compounding factors that can impact the wellbeing and success of university students

Abstract:
This paper advocates for the role of “international student support experts” in Australian higher education by showcasing four creative, cost-effective initiatives developed by the University of Adelaide’s International Student Support team. These initiatives address the nuanced needs of international students, countering the trend towards centralised support models that may overlook their specific circumstances. The first initiative is a dynamic online space on the University’s Canvas learning management system (LMS), “MyUni”, offering essential resources, community-building activities, and a

Abstract:
As clusters of state-of-the-art instruments and research enablement services, research cores are not only the cornerstone of research activities at university campuses but also critical assets that provide competitive differentiation for their host institutions. However, these research cores are highly expensive for academic institutions to manage. Despite the growing recognition and impact of these research cores, there are few studies that describe the business models for sustaining and funding research cores or their increasing significance to the larger academic community.
