Sotillo, Rodríguez Fernando. "Pathophysiology of immune-related complications in Lysinuric Protein Intolerance." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/463008.

Abstract:
Lysinuric Protein Intolerance (LPI, MIM #222700) is a rare autosomic disease caused by mutations in SLC7A7 gene. Hallmarks of LPI are malabsorption and deficient renal reabsorption of cationic amino acids, which drives a deficit in the functioning of the urea cycle due to the reduction levels of arginine and ornithine in plasma. Nevertheless LPI patients also develop immune and hematologic complications such as anemia, pulmonary alveolar proteinosis or hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. However the molecular mechanism(s) and/or the initiation events that trigger the development of LPI immune

Magister Public Health - MPH<br>Background: The hallmark of HIV infection is immunosuppression which predisposes to unusual infections and malignancies generally known as opportunistic diseases (ODs). Globally, ODs are the major cause of morbidity and mortality in people living with HIV (PLHIV). Since the advent of Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART), a significant decline in AIDS progression and ODs has been observed globally. However, most of the evidence suggesting sustained decline in AIDS progression and ODs has come from high-income settings with relatively less burden of ODs i

Background Obesity is an important risk factor for resistance to insulin-mediated glucose disposal, and is a precursor of type 2 diabetes and other disorders. Objectives To identify molecular pathways in adipose tissue and inflammatory cells that may result in obesity-associated insulin resistance, we exploited the fact that not all obese individuals are prone to insulin resistance. Thus the degree of obesity as a variable was removed by studying obese subjects of similar body mass index (BMI) who are insulin-sensitive (IS) versus insulin-resistant (IR). The neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCLs or Batten disease) are inherited neurodegenerative diseases of children. In all types of NCL glial activation, the innate immune response of the brain, precedes neurodegeneration. However, it is unclear whether adaptive immune responses are also involved in these diseases, or if they directly contribute to disease pathogenesis. Therefore, we examined the role of adaptive immune cells in mouse models of Infantile NCL (Ppt1-/- mice) and Juvenile NCL (Cln3-/- mice) by identifying, localising, and subsequently genetically removing immune components. Parzych, Katarzyna. "The role of innate immune system receptors in smoking related disease." Thesis, Imperial College London, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10044/1/14371.

Abstract:
Cigarette smoke induces inflammation, in part, by activation of Toll like receptor (TLR) 2 and TLR4. TLRs are present on most cells and recognize pathogen associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) and non-pathogenic molecules, known as danger associated molecular patterns (DAMPs). Activation of TLRs results in the propagation of a signalling pathway leading to the de novo synthesis of pro-inflammatory mediators that include CXCL8 and IL-1β. TLRs initiate inflammation and are involved in tissue repair processes in a number of diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cancer.

A polyclonal increase in free light chains (FLCs) has been observed in a number of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune conditions and may be considered a biomarker of adaptive immune activation. Combined (\(\kappa\) & \(\lambda\)) FLCs (cFLCs) were measured in patients with AlATD and usual COPD in the stable state and assessed for association with clinical phenotype, disease severity, bacterial colonisation and mortal

Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy R3 (LGMDR3), previously known as LGMD2D, is a rare autosomal recessive primary myopathy, clinically characterized by progressive involvement of the pelvic and shoulder girdles, and genetically by mutations in the αsarcoglycan gene (SGCA) coding for α-sarcoglycan (SG). The clinical course of LGMDR3 presents a great variability, ranging from severe form with onset in the first decade of life and rapid progression, to milder form with later onset. Durante o seu ciclo replicativo, o HIV promove diversas alterações na fisiologia da célula hospedeira a fim de promover sua sobrevivência e potencializar a replicação.
