Using computer-assisted techniques, this study analyzes the mean contact area of the articular surface of the second tarsometatarsal joint. The articular contact area decreased proportionate to the displacement in both males and females, but it was consistently greater in males than in females for all simulated displacements. The reduction in the contact area was the highest with dorsolateral displacement compared with the lateral and dorsal displacements. Dorsolateral displacement of the second metatarsal of 3 mm led to 38.6% reduction in the contact area, compared with 33.1% and 20.2% reduct

A position sense should not depend on the speed of joint placement; therefore slow rates of movement should not degrade subjects' ability to sense joint displacements. One of the obstacles to creating effective tremor suppression devices is our lack of understanding regarding where tremor originates (which muscles), how it propagates through the limb (to which degrees of freedom, DOF), and where it manifests most severely (which DOF). To investigate these questions, we created a simple, linear time-invariant model to simulate tremor, with tremorogenic muscle activity input (in the 15 major superficial muscles from the shoulder to the wrist) and joint displacem

Abstract The piano is one of the most popular instruments to learn among young musicians due to its versatility. As with any other physical activity, fluid piano performance requires practice to improve technique and reduce the injury risk in long playing sessions. One expert and one intermediate piano player performed three piano playing tasks at three different tempos while body kinematics data were collected with multiple inertial measurement units (IMUs). The maximum and minimum angular displacement of upper body joints and joint displacement were observed as a function of time. For all te

Tunnelling and deep excavation activities cause ground movements. Monitoring the influence of these ground movements on nearby surface assets is a major component of urban underground construction projects. Such projects often require large-scale and comprehensive monitoring of nearby buildings to track displacements and identify structural damage. Masonry assets are particularly vulnerable to ground movements due to the low tensile strength of the material; these structures may experience unsightly cracking and structural stability issues. Current monitoring practice for these buildings is la

This project investigated and upgraded the digital filtering used to interpret NoPig displacement data. This upgrade should allow the system to be used on long seam welded pipes. Limited laboratory testing was performed to show the improvement on ERW pipe. The NoPig method is a non-destructive testing method for unpiggable pipelines which uses above ground measurements for detecting and sizing wall thickness anomalies like corrosion. The method uses an applied current containing several distinct frequencies between two points on a pipeline up to 1 km apart. The resultant magnetic field is meas

AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON SEISMIC PERFORMANCE OF STEEL COMPOSITE BEAM-COLUMN RIGID JOINT AND BUCKLING RESTRAINED KNEE-BRACED JOINT. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.18057/ijasc.2023.19.4.6.

Abstract:
This paper evaluates the seismic performance of conventional steel composite beam-column rigid joints, and a novel buckling restrained knee-braced joint (BRKBJ), considering the impact of the floor slab. A series of quasi-static comparative tests were conducted to analyze the failure mode, load-bearing capacity, hysteresis performance, and ductility of both types of joints. Our findings revealed that the hysteretic curve of the BRKBJ exhibits a robust and shuttle-like shape, suggesting an adequate energy dissipation performance. However, its yield displacement is relatively small. Conversely,

EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON CYCLIC BEHAVIOR OF BLIND-BOLT JOINT CONNECTING STEEL BEAM AND RECTANGULAR TUBE COLUMN. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.18057/ijasc.2023.19.2.1.

Abstract:
An experimental investigation on the cyclic behavior of the joints for steel H-shaped beams to steel rectangular tube columns using end-plate and blind bolts is conducted in this paper. The load-bearing capacity, rotation stiffness and hysteretic behavior of the joints are studied. In terms of the types of beams (pure steel beam and composite steel beam with concrete slab) and columns (pure steel rectangular tube column and concrete-filled steel rectangular tube column), a total of four different joints are tested and compared. It is found that filling concrete in rectangular tube columns can

ANALYSIS OF THE DYNAMIC MECHANISM OF SQUARE TUBULAR T-JOINTS WITH CHORD FLANGES SUBJECTED TO IMPACT LOADING. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.18057/ijasc.2024.20.1.3.

Abstract:
This study examines the dynamic mechanical properties of square tubular T-joints with impact loads acting on the chord surface in the joint area. The study first verified the failure modes and behaviors of the specimens under a brace axial force and impact, respectively, where the simulation results demonstrated good agreement with the experimental results. A total of 138 square hollow section tubular T-joint finite element models were divided into T1, T2, and T3 groups based on different tube diameter ratios. Impacts of displacement: Displacement linked to sea level rise on Plantain Island, Sierra Leone. Internal Displacement Monitoring Center (IDMC), 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.55363/idmc.ucxv2874.

Full text
Abstract:
Plantain Island, which hosts a fishing community of around 5,800 people, has been losing homes and land to the sea for several decades. Many of those who lost their homes left the island, seeking refuge in other communities in the mainland. Those who were unable to leave the island were forced to move further inland on the island itself. Sierra Leone’s National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) and the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) conducted joint research on this displacement situation in June 2024. This report presents key findings, potential solutions and ways forward.

In this paper, the joint parameters derived from testing the new fully-bolted core tube beam-column joint were utilized in the finite element analysis of the complete frame structure. The static elastic-plastic time-history analysis of 8, 12, 16, and 20-story steel frames with the braces was carried out. By comparing the maximum inter-layer displacement angles in the X and Y directions when the frame yielded, the rationality of the brace arrangement and the applicability of the new fully-bolted core tube beam-column joints in the multi-story and high-rise steel frames were confirmed. A SIMPLE METHOD FOR A RELIABLE MODELLING OF THE NONLINEAR BEHAVIOUR OF BOLTED CONNECTIONS IN STEEL LATTICE TOWERS. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.18057/ijasc.2022.18.1.6.

Abstract:
The behaviour of bolted connections in steel lattice transmission line towers affects their load-bearing capacity and failure mode. Bolted connections are commonly modelled as pinned or fixed joints, but their behaviour lies between these two extremes and evolves in a nonlinear manner. Accordingly, an accurate finite element modelling of the structural response of complete steel lattice towers requires the consideration of various nonlinear phenomena involved in bolted connexions, such as bolt slippage. In this study, a practical method is proposed for the modelling of the nonlinear response o
