Abstract:
The debate on the position of local pig species or indigenous Sulawesi pigs, especially on small islands, is still developing. Local Sulawesi pigs are thought to be the ancestors of local pigs in the Philippines and other islands in the Pacific. This study analyzed the phenotypic characteristics, species position, and molecular phylogeny of local pigs from Nain Island using the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) gene. Tail tissue was used for genomic DNA extraction, CO1 gene amplification was carried out by PCR method, and amplicon visualization used 0.8% gel electrophoresis. The forward and

Abstract In-line inspection of underground pipelines for corrosion damage using “smart” pigs is now quite common. With the advent of high-resolution pigs that can identify large numbers of potential anomalies, more sophisticated methodologies are required for interpreting the results of an in-line inspection. Of particular interest is the probability that the depth of corrosion in a particular location exceeds a critical depth defined by the local pipe characteristics and maximum operating pressure. In this paper, a Bayesian statistical methodology for determining the probability that corrosio

Abstract In the oil and gas industry, the management of the integrity of all pipelines and associated equipment ensures safe operation and availability for production during their intended life. Pipeline integrity assessment is usually executed in three separate steps: threats (e.g., corrosion) analysis including effectiveness and efficiency of mitigation;verification by monitoring and inspection;fitness for service analysis to determine integrity status, estimate remaining life, and identify required follow up actions. Typically, in-line inspection by intelligent pigs is used to inspect for c

Abstract The influence of local conditions on pit development in saline environments have been studied by probing the local pH, chloride ion activity and potential within growing pits formed on UNS S30100 steel. The anodic behaviour of the steel was also studied in solutions which simulate the local pH and chloride ion concentration within a pit at different stages of development. In situ microelectrode measurements within natural pits in UNS S30100 suggest that, while the early development of a shallow pit is controlled by the potential drop, the steady development of deeper pits is caused by

Abstract The results of this investigation, which revealed heavy carburization in a 25Cr/35Ni/1.5Nb olefin pyrolysis furnace tube being operated at about 850°C for approximately one year, are discussed. Severe localized damage was in the shape of isolated rounded cavities with diameters of 6-8 mm and depth of about 2 mm. Optical microscopy and SEM/EDX analysis of the areas under the pits showed secondary carbide precipitation at the grain boundaries and within the grains along with heavy intergranular attack up to complete separation of grains. Abstract Corrosion problems associated with pitting in water containing dissolved carbon dioxide are a major concern in the oil and gas industry. The local, accelerated rate of corrosion, associated with carbon dioxide induced pitting, has caused large amounts of unplanned maintenance to oil and gas installations. The pattern of pit location and growth is impossible to predict reliably. The usual approach to corrosion control is to incorporate very large safety factors. The carbon dioxide corrosion process has been modelled by numerous investigators and studied by even more. A sound, quantitat

Abstract The influence of a plastic deformation on the electrochemical behaviour of inclusions-containing stainless steels was investigated on a microscopic scale using the electrochemical microcell technique. The polarisation curves were determined in 1.5M NaCl, pH3 on sites of 100 µm diameter containing either the pure matrix or the matrix with a single MnS inclusion and in presence of microcracks. Initiation of metastable and stable pits was discussed according to the morphology of microcracks and the size of the inclusions.

Abstract Galvele introduced a new quantitative framework for localized corrosion through his seminal paper on acidification and chloride accumulation in pits and the need for a critical product of current density and pit depth to sustain this local chemistry. This concept, introduced in 1976, holds good today, but has been enhanced by the ability to conduct more complex computations, better modeling of concentrated solutions that could be present in local areas, and the ability to perform in-situ chemical analyses in pits. The purpose of this paper is to review the progress in these areas with

Abstract Hydrogen sulfide greatly enhances stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) of austenitic and duplex stainless steels in chloride solutions, without changing the essential cracking mechanism. Localized corrosion is essential to initiate SCC, which requires an acid crack chemistry. The enhancement of localized corrosion by H2S is not straightforward, since while it is possible for H2S to catalyze the growth of small pits, it may become depleted within deep pits or cracks. This work was undertaken to clarify several aspects of this local chemistry and its relation to SCC. Critical H2S levels for

In this work, micro-electrochemical techniques, including localized electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and scanning vibrating electrode technique, were used to characterize in-situ the pitting corrosion processes of an X80 steel in CO2-saturated NaCl solutions. Results demonstrated that corrosion pits could initiate and grow on the steel, which is covered with a layer of sands. With the increase of test time, pi

Results of a nationwide survey of 1,373 municipalities show that majority of municipalities use CBMS, not just for ecological profiling in development planning but also for budget preparations and priority setting.
