Biofouling is a major problem for long-term deployment of sensors in marine environments. The aim of this project is to find a practical and effective strategy to prevent the biofilm formation on sensors; especially in the marine environment. For this purpose the planktonic and biofilm microbial community structure of the Mid-Cayman ridge were examined. 2) The effect of biofouling the material from which the surface is manufactured. 3) Efficacy of antifouling strategie

Abstract Non-metallic Glass Reinforced Epoxy (GRE) tubulars have gained significant momentum in the oil, gas, and energy sectors due to its unique non-corrosive properties which reduces Opex and overall Life Cycle Cost (LCC). Hence, it is being widely offered as an alternative to the traditionally used steel tubulars in various downhole applications. Throughout the years, the use of high pressure GRE threaded tubulars has expanded to multiple water, oil, and gas applications such as: Production wells, Injection wells, hydrocarbon pipelines, gas pipelines, and liners for repair of corroded stee

Abstract:
The Zanzibar Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (MoEVT) and the World Bank (the Bank) approached the EdTech Hub (the Hub) in April 2020 to explore the feasibility of implementing a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). The Hub was requested to focus primarily on the deployment of a VLE in lower secondary education, and this report consequently focuses primarily on this group. The report is structured in four sections: An introduction to provide the background and guiding principles for the engagement with a short overview of the methodology applied. An analysis of the Zanzibar educati

The objective of this report is to present an actionable programme to bring initial moonshot ideas into fully accomplishable projects, ready to be deployed. It comprises three parts. The first part, namely Section 2, provides a background and development avenues for three broad domains of Caribbean economies, namely electric vehicles, digital transformation, and tourism. The second part breaks down the realisation of moonshot ideas into steps using a comprehensive roadmap, which lays out, in sequential point-by-point form, how to steer the coherent long-term deployment of moonshot ideas into c

Abstract:
Latin America's energy transition is advancing at different speeds across the region, with Chile and Peru representing two distinct approaches. Chile, a leader in renewable energy deployment, faces structural challenges, including financial difficulties among generators and transmission bottlenecks due to a lack of a robust infrastructure. Meanwhile, Peru remains in the early stages of its energy transition, with recent legal reforms attempting to facilitate non-conventional renewable integration but lacking a comprehensive national strategy. This paper examines regulatory challenges in both c

An employability strategy communicates the commitment of higher education institutions (HEIs) towards students’ future, signals effectiveness and efficiency in resource allocation, and positions HEIs against competing institutions. However, not all HEIs display the same awareness when it comes to the design of a coherent bundle of actions in support of their graduates’ employability. This paper focuses on the formation of employment strategies to test the contrasting hypotheses of planned strategy, that frames strategy as an explicit and purposeful plan fully designed before deployment, and em

[Extract from Executive Summary] This project, aimed at the development of a novel, automated mechanism for the collection of scallop stock data was a sub-part of the Scottish Inshore Fisheries Integrated Data Systems (SIFIDS) project. The project reviewed the state-of-the-art remote sensing (geophysical and camera-based) technologies available from industry and compared these to inexpensive, off-the -shelf equipment. Sea trials were conducted on scallop dredge sites and also hand-dived scallop sites. Data was analysed manually, and tests conducted with automated processing methods. It was con

2016 will surely be the hottest year since records began in the 19th century. The increase will be very close to the target set in the Paris Agreement to avoid an increase in global temperature by 1.5 °C. Average temperaturesin 2016 have risen to 1.2 °C above what they were before the industrial revolution. The dilemma facing the world today, in view of these data, becomes even more urgent: How to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels, accepting that their demand will continue to exist in the coming decades? In the energy sector, many solutions have been proposed to completely repl

The Coral Reef Ecosystem Water Temperature Monitoring protocol is a guide for the deployment, maintenance, and data management of South Florida/Caribbean Network temperature loggers. These loggers are deployed at long-term benthic monitoring sites and help interpret coral health at these locations. The three primary objectives for this monitoring protocol include: 1) Determine occurrence and duration of warm- and cold-water events that exceed thresholds known to cause stress (e.g., coral bleaching) to coral species for the purpose of interpreting trends in coral community metrics; 2) Determine

Traffic congestion causes Americans to lose millions of hours and dollars each year. In fact, 1.9 billion gallons of fuel are wasted each year due to traffic congestion, and each hour stuck in traffic costs about $21 in wasted time and fuel. The traffic congestion can be caused by various factors, such as bottlenecks, traffic incidents, bad weather, work zones, poor traffic signal timing, and special events. One key step to addressing traffic congestion and identifying its root cause is an accurate prediction of traffic flow. Accurate traffic flow prediction is also important for the successfu
