Abstract:
This paper focuses on the mathematisation of mechanics in the seventeenth century, specifically on how the representation of compounded rectilinear motions presented in the ancient Greek Mechanica found its way into Newton’s Principia almost two thousand years later. I aim to show that the path from the former to the latter was optical: the conceptualisation of geometrical lines as paths of reflection created a physical interpretation of diagrammatic principles of geometrical point-motion, involving the kinematics and dynamics of light reflection. Upon the atomistic conception of light, the optical interpretation of such geometrical principles entailed their mechanical generalisation to local motion; rectilinear motion via the physico-mathematics of reflection and the Mechanica’s parallelogram rule; circular motion via the physico-mathematics of reflection, the Archimedean squaring of the circle and the Mechanica’s extension of the parallelogram rule to centripetal motion. This appeal to the physico-mathematics of reflection forged a realist foundation for the mathematisation of motion. Whereas Aristotle’s physics rested on motions which had their source in the nature of the elements, early modern thinkers such as Harriot, Descartes, and Newton based their new principles of mechanical motion upon selected elements of the mechanics of light motion, projected upon the geometry of the parallelogram rule for rectilinear and, ultimately, circular motion.

Abstract:
The program system Pro/MechaniCa is a specific software product designed for solving of different kinds of technical problems in general engineering. We were looking for usage not only in the engineering but also in the terramechanical area. We realized a simulation loading of the soil with a rigid circular table and after the loading we calculated deformations and stresses under the table using FEM (Finite Element Method). This article shows a specific exploitation program Pro/Mechanica in an unconventional area as well as in the agricultural area.

Abstract:
Although the COVID-19 outbreak has decreased dermatology outpatient clinic visits, acne remains the most common condition among patients requesting an appointment. The widespread use of face masks may be a contributing factor to acne mechanica and folliculitis mechanica, where stopping the mechanical insult is essential to treatment. However, COVID-19 poses a unique challenge as mask wearing is crucial to limiting viral exposure. Although reported cases of mask-associated facial dermatoses are largely documented in healthcare workers, the general population is being affected by “maskne”. Pathogenesis and treatment options are discussed and the importance of counseling patients on proper skin hygiene is highlighted. As mask use increases, dermatologists should anticipate this trend in acne flare-ups.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article investigates the Arabic tradition of the Problemata Mechanica, a Greek text of mechanics ascribed to Aristotle, of which it has often been said that Arabic classical culture had been ignorant of it. Against this prevailed claim, it is shown that the Arabo-Muslim scholars had access to the text at least in the form of an abridged version entitled Nutaf min al-iyal edited by al-Khāzinī (twelfth century) in Kitāb mīzān al-ikma (Book of the Balance of Wisdom). The article includes the critical edition of the Arabic text of the Nutaf on the basis of the two extant manuscripts and its English translation. Finally, the mechanical theory in the Nutaf is characterized briefly.

Abstract:
Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract The design of a novel scanning apparatus used for digitizing dental impression molds is presented. The apparatus consists of a four-degree-of-freedom hybrid spherical linkage capable of moving the dental mold relative to a laser scanner along a curved path in the specified orientations. Since closed form inverse kinematics solutions are not available for the multiple degree-of-freedom spatial mechanism in question, symbolic and numerical computation techniques are used extensively for kinematics analysis, dimension design, and optimization. In addition, mechanical design and simulation software (Pro/Engineer & Pro/Mechanica), as well as the rapid prototyping machines are used to reduce the development cost and cycle time.

Abstract:
Because wear, clearance and backlash can be reduced or eliminated, one of the important advantages of compliant mechanisms is their potential to increase the mechanism precision dramatically. In this paper, a spatial compliant mechanism based on the 3-PRRR parallel mechanism driven by linear motors is presented. The design methodology is described and the kinematic and static models are developed. Using the “transmission ratio”, an effective and simple compensation method is designed. The performances of this mechanism are studied with the help of the structure simulation module in Pro-Mechanica. Using an open-loop control with compensation, measurements over a 20×20×20 mm3 workspace show that the position accuracy is smaller than 1 μm, i.e., 0.05% of the full range of motion and that the orientation error is less than 1 μradian.

Abstract:
Numerically calculated stress in the region of two normally intersecting pipes due to in-plane bending moments using finite element program MECHANICA are presented in this paper. The computer results were processed and then presented in stress versus location (along several lines) diagrams. Other investigators’ results for similar problem are not easy to obtain due to differences in the problem, in modelling, in finite element program used and in methods of data presentation. Lock et al (1985) and Moffat et al (1984) works were the closest for comparison purposes.

Abstract:
With an estimated three billion man-hours of use each year, improvements to the mechanical efficiency of lawnmower systems may yield significant reductions in emissions. Modifications to either the blade geometry or material have been considered in order to achieve the desired gains in efficiency. Specifically, focus is placed upon identification of a more efficient edge shape, reduction of required power input to the blade, and extending the life of the blade sharpness. Using software packages such as Parametric Technology Corporation’s (PTC’s) Pro/Engineer the students were able to increase the quality of design via finite element analysis (FEA) programs such as MSC. Nastran or PTC’s Mechanica. AISI 440C stainless steel was selected as a possible candidate based upon several appealing properties such as high strength, hardness, and resistance to corrosion. It does however have a lower fracture toughness and therefore presents a higher susceptibility to brittle fracture. When both the traditional stress analysis and fracture analysis were considered, opposing results were found. Due to this, other criteria such as cost of material, machining costs, and carbon footprint were considered before making a final design decision. Enhancing education in engineering by diversifying design criteria and encouraging students to address contemporary, real-world design problems was a primary goal of this project. The traditional mechanical design approach relies on stress-strain analysis in order to predict potential failure scenarios, and is the primary technique presented in most undergraduate engineering curricula. Despite its significance, the fracture mechanics approach is not often presented in great detail at the undergraduate level. The academic benefits of including these more universal considerations in the undergraduate engineering curriculum are illustrated in this paper.

Abstract:
The objective of this paper is to perform FEA analysis to establish a baseline analysis for the feasibility/optimization of the sidewalls for a simple wind box. A basic static finite element analysis (FEA) was run using Pro/Mechanica on the wind tank. The tank had corrugated walls, a flat bottom except for 3 sparse corrugations, and header that attaches to the top of all the tank walls around the perimeter of the tank. All components in the tank were constructed from 316L Stainless Steel material. Loads on the tank were then applied in the form of gravity (acting on all parts of the tank) and pressure (designated at 10 psi) acting on all the sidewalls and bottom of the tank. To make the analysis more efficient the model was idealized using shell elements, where applicable. The FEA analysis was completed to compare triangular, sinusoidal and trapezoidal sidewall designs for a simple wind box. The trapezoidal design was the best of the three designs, because it delivered the lowest stress and deformation levels. The sinusoidal and triangular corrugated walls provided a 6% reduction in needed material, but did not produce the same Factor of Safety as compared to the trapezoidal wall.

Abstract:
Sliding friction on ice and snow is characteristically low at temperatures common on Earth’s surface. This slipperiness underlies efficient sleds, winter sports, and the need for specialized tires. Friction can also play micro-mechanical role affecting ice compressive and crushing strengths. Researchers have proposed several mechanisms thought to govern ice and snow friction, but directly validating the underlying mechanics has been difficult. This may be changing, as instruments capable of micro-scale measurements and imaging are now being brought to bear on friction studies. Nevertheless, given the broad regimes of practical interest (interaction length, temperature, speed, pressure, slider properties, etc.), it may be unrealistic to expect that a single mechanism accounts for why ice and snow are slippery. Because bulk ice, and the ice grains that constitute snow, are solids near their melting point at terrestrial temperatures, most research has focused on whether a lubricating water film forms at the interface with a slider. However, ice is extremely brittle, and dry-contact abrasion and wear at the front of sliders could prevent or delay a transition to lubricated contact. Also, water is a poor lubricant, and lubricating films thick enough to separate surface asperities may not form for many systems of interest. This article aims to assess our knowledge of the mechanics underlying ice and snow friction.
