Abstract Three new directions in solving corrosion problems are described. Ion chromatography is contributing to the understanding of corrosion processes by providing data on anion species in solution and on surfaces. Kepner-Tregoe and Ishikawa logic conventions enable corrosion problems to be addressed on a systematic basis. Education of all levels of staff in statistical thinking as part of overall Total Quality Control concepts is viewed as an essential component in minimizing or eliminating waste in organisations.
