Abstract:
Northern Albania, the "land of the pomegranates", is a region where culture and nature are intimately bound up. This hypertext is proposed as an innovative tool of scientific divulgation for the valorisation of this precious and little-known territory, while also lending itself to various types of exploitation for tourist purposes. The itineraries, which radiate outwards from the city of Scutari, are presented through synthetic factsheets, composed using a simple and immediate language, and deriving from direct observation. Precisely because of its multiple functions, the hypertext has been organised at a number of levels: from simple description to historic and literary references or the reports of travellers, through to the detailing of the tourist resources available.

Abstract:
This article examines massive multiple realization (MMR) in the context of neurobiology. It highlights the differences in the conception of multiple realization and its methodological implications by researchers in the philosophy of psychology and those in the philosophy of neuroscience. It discusses neurobiological findings about MMR and shows that there is plausibly important individual variation at every physiologically significant level of organization in the nervous system. It explores philosophical concerns about the MMR hypothesis and proposes a framework for realization and multiple realization.

Baxter, Donald L. M. Hume on Abstraction and Identity. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780190608040.003.0013.

Abstract:
Hume’s critique of the traditional account of abstraction applies to his own account of the idea of identity. Abstraction is mentally separating what are inseparable in reality. The inseparable are identical. So abstraction is mentally separating something from itself. That is to conceive it as distinct from itself, which seems inconceivable. For Hume, conceiving of identity requires taking two views of something, first as one, single thing and second as multiple, distinct things. So it requires conceiving of the single thing viewed one way as somehow distinct from itself viewed the other way. If that is conceivable then so is abstraction. Thus, traditional abstraction and Hume’s account of the idea of identity stand or fall together. Along the way the chapter argues that Locke’s version of abstraction is the traditional one rather than the partial consideration some commentators attribute to him.

Abstract:
At each point across the disease spectrum, the MS nurse plays a pivotal role in the symptom management and comprehensive care of patients with multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis most often affects young adults in the prime of life, derailing and interrupting goals and plans for the future. Whereas a neurologist might look at the disease burden of the brain, the MS nurse looks at the burden on a patient’s life. This nursing approach enables the MS nurse to help patients adjust and adapt to changes and symptoms as disease progression occurs and to empower them to live with the highest quality of life possible. As patients adjust to major life changes or advancing levels of disability, MS nurses can offer support and instill a sense of hope. This support is also important in promoting empowerment and wellness for persons with MS.

Abstract:
There is growing concern that suffering multiple sport-related concussions may increase an athlete’s risk of cumulative neurocognitive and neurobehavioral impairment. Many concerns have not been well-validated, however, owing to limited samples of repeatedly concussed players. In this article, we review the theoretical risks and current evidence regarding the extent to which repeat concussions impact players’ experience of and recovery following successive injuries. Concussion effects are considered at multiple levels (e.g., self-reported physical and psychiatric symptoms, neuropsychological performance, and neurophysiological measures) across both the acute and chronic phases of recovery. Recommendations for applying findings to injury management decisions are provided. Although repeat concussions appear to have the potential for cumulative neurophysiological burden, a number of factors (e.g., individual risk for experiencing or responding poorly to injury, recovery time between injuries) appear important to explain discrepant findings among studies and to translate general scientific principles into clinical decisions for individual players. Future work that accumulates larger, prospective samples will allow for clearer delineation of the factors that appear important for predicting how recurrent concussions impact individual athletes.

Devetak, Richard. International Relations before Critical Theory. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198823568.003.0002.

Abstract:
The chapter elaborates the post-war disciplinary context from which critical international theory emerged. While most accounts start with the so-called ‘third debate’, this chapter situates its emergence in the longer story of the rise in theory’s prestige in the social sciences. It tells the story of a series of disputes over method (Methodenstreit) that paved the way not just for higher levels of theoretical abstraction, and a never vanquished humanist challenge to the scientific outlook. It was during the 1950s that the persona of the theorist was first established in international relations. In the following decades, personae of the international relations theorist evolved through academic institutionalization of certain epistemic practices and technical capabilities modelled on behaviouralist and philosophy-of-science standards. The stage was thus set for a rival, namely, critical intellectual persona to emerge in opposition to both the humanist and scientific outlooks, but in continuity with the ever-higher orders of abstraction.

Abstract:
Cognitive science is a science of intelligent systems. This chapter proposes that cognitive science can provide useful perspectives for research on technology-mediated human-information interaction (HII) when HII is cast as emergent behaviour of a coupled intelligent system. It starts with a review of a few foundational concepts related to cognitive computations and how they can be applied to understand the nature of HII. It discusses several important properties of a coupled cognitive system and their implication to designs of information systems. Finally, it covers how levels of abstraction have been useful for cognitive science, and how these levels can inform design of intelligent information systems that are more compatible with human cognitive computations.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the social life of play. As the patterning of human relationships, social context shapes play by offering behavioral formats or directives that both support and restrict our actions. Such directives are manifested in countless situations and at different levels of abstraction; they constitute the social reality of our lives. In that context, the chapter examines play as a “social construction of reality”—that is, a process of reality construction and maintenance. It discusses three levels of social reality: self-identity, social relationships, and social structure. It also considers George Herbert Mead's play and game stages of development, play as performance and presentation, Georg Simmel's play form of association, Erving Goffman's theory of frame utilization, social functions of play, and play's relationship to power and privilege. The chapter concludes by revisiting Pierre Bourdieu's argument that similarly situated groups of people develop their own tastes and style of life that afford them personal satisfaction and easeful interaction.

Abstract:
The chapter clarifies the conclusion of Brentano’s Duplication Argument. On Brentano’s view, a conscious mental act is directed on two objects, one of them being the act itself, but its plural reference is primitive, not due to the fact that the mental act has parts which each have reference on their own. Because of the plural reference the act can be brought under different partial concepts that are arrived at by abstraction. Brentano’s view is compared with contemporary versions of self-representationalism and shown not to admit of higher orders, double presentations, or indirect presentation of complexes. Brentano’s Duplication Argument makes plausible that awareness of perceiving can’t be such a complex that integrates independently existing mental acts; instead one simple act can have multiple objects.

Abstract:
Previous reviews of the fit perspectives in SHRM have had a pessimistic tone and concluded that there was little evidence of the assumption that ‘fit’ leads to organizational success, although most reviews did not specifically focus on internal fit. This article aims to revisit the theoretical foundation of internal fit and provide a review of the literature addressing this issue. Specifically, it sets out to explore the theory and research behind the internal fit perspective in an attempt to summarize and advance our knowledge behind HRM systems and internal fit. In doing so, it addresses the theory behind ‘fit’, the interplay between external and internal fit, issues of the level of abstraction (e.g. focus on HRM philosophies, policies, or practices in measuring HRM systems), different types of internal fit, problems stemming from levels of analysis issues, and the empirical evidence, before summarizing and concluding.

Abstract:
Thought and Play in Musical Rhythm seeks to explore representations and implicit as well as explicit theorizing of rhythm in relation to aspects of performance that resist objectification and/or are elastic. Authored by ethnomusicologists and music theorists, the chapters provide detailed case studies of art and vernacular musical traditions, historical and contemporary, in South, West, East, and Southeast Asia; West and North Africa; Europe; and North America. Together these case studies highlight the multiple dimensions of musical rhythm. Considering rhythm as a topic involves a set of terminologies, methods, assumptions, and efforts at generalizing and abstracting that together point to a larger dynamic in scholarly discourse between universalizing and local approaches to rhythm and music more generally. However, from a theoretical standpoint, the volume rejects the kind of abstraction that removes “rhythm” from musical process and experience.

Abstract:
Beginning by recognizing that the idea of female divinity in Hinduism has been a mystery from the inception of Hindu theology, this Introduction proceeds to an overview of the contents of this volume. Presenting the chapters, arranged thematically and historically into four related parts, this Introduction shows how Hindu philosophy and worship practices have expounded the idea of the divine feminine by conceptualizing it as a personified goddess at once singular and manifested in multiple forms. Drawing upon a variety of Hindu philosophical traditions, the authors relate the goddess as an abstraction to belief systems that render the goddess as humanized figures. In both formal theology and popular belief, this conception has resulted in an emotional and spiritual closeness to goddesses that continues deeply to influence Hindu social life and its cultural expressions, especially in its impact on the lives of women.
