This chapter explores socioeconomic, political, religious ethno-cultural, and national positions toward language management, which underlie diachronic changes in South Asian nations’ language policies and linguistic ideologies. In South Asia, feelings toward linguistic diversity, as realized through national language policies and in actual national language management practices, are highly diverse. Secrecy and informality rather than transparency traditionally reign trade negotiations at the bilateral, regional, and multilateral levels. Yet, transparency ranks among the most basic desiderata in the grammar of global governance and has been regarded as positively related to legitimacy. In the EU’s case, transparent trade diplomacy is quintessential for constitutional—but also for broader political—reasons. First, even if trade matters fall within the EU’s exclusive competence, the EU executive is bound by the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU) to inform the European Pa

Abstract:
This chapter discusses issues of global ocean governance from an African perspective. It first provides an overview of the historical lack of engagement by Africa in the 400-year long evolution of the customary international law of the sea before considering its belated entry into the international negotiation process that yielded the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). It then describes the developing institutional framework for African ocean governance, focusing on the African Union and its areas of competence, along with the different African regional arrangements

Abstract:
The chapter provides a reconstruction and analysis of adjustment processes in the Italian financial system after the major cleavage of the First World War. It considers how pressures exerted by external factors entailed a progressive adaptive strategy to a changing international environment. Financial and monetary instability called for a more intensive regulation reallocating responsibilities and powers from the private sector to the public sphere. Accordingly, financial elites changed their contours and boundaries. As the demand for technical competences and bargaining abilities rose, Italia

This chapter synopsizes principal conclusions presented in this book. It stresses that mega-regional agreements risk further augmenting the fragmentation of international economic law and undermining the WTO negotiating forum. Regarding regulatory cooperation, it questions whether non-binding initiatives as those envisioned under CETA and TTIP will succeed and argues that efforts to reduce the vagueness of investment disciplines and thereby to protect domestic policy spaces are questionable. It also stresses that the controversial division of competences between the EU and its Member States gr

This study sought to examine the main constraints to manufacturing export competitiveness in Tanzania. Using panel data for the period 1997–2018, the study established that supply-side factors dominate demand-side factors in explaining manufacturing export competitiveness. Specifically, the results revealed that foreign direct investment and tariffs have a negative and significant effect on export competitiveness in Tanzania, while infrastructure, total investment, labour productivity, and high institutional quality enhance manufactured exports. The study also showed scope for quality upgradin

Trade Policy in Multilevel Government investigates how multilevel polities organize openness in a globalizing political and economic environment. In recent years, the multilevel politics of trade caught the broader public’s attention, not least due to the Wallonian regional parliament’s initial rejection of the EU-Canada trade deal in 2016. In all multilevel polities, competencies held by states and regions have increasingly become the subject of international rule-setting. This is particularly so in the field of trade, which has progressively targeted so-called “behind the border” regulatory
