Abstract:
Scholarly accounts of John Henry Newman's writings often emphasize passages where he describes the impossibility of persons adopting an objective view of their own perspectives and commitments. Newman seems, in this respect, quite at odds with nineteenth-century valorizations of detachment. “Newman's Detachment” seeks to modify this consensus. Focusing on Certain Difficulties Felt by Anglicans in Catholic Teaching (1850) and Apologia Pro Vita Sua (1864), this essay uncovers Newman's distanced and provisional attitude toward belief. His surprising affinity with modern liberal detachment becomes

ABSTRACT: For Erich Przywara S. J. (1889-1972), Newman stands in a line of philosophers that deal with the "coincidence of opposites," stretching back to Heraclitus. But how are coinciding opposites to be understood in the context of the Christian life? Are they not in fact contradictions which compel a choosing of one opposite to the exclusion of the other? Although Newman's relationship to Augustine in particular is key to Przywara's analysis, it is to Newman's specific contributions that Przywara turns in order to answer these questions. For over a century Cardinal Newman's contribution to the idea of a liberal education has received widespread attention. His basic position, that a liberal education conslsts in a well-informed judgment combined with an ability to perform the different logical operations involved in reasoning well, has frequently been criticized on the grounds that it failed to cater to religious and moral training. However, this is not an altogether legitimate criticism. Newman never intended his liberal education to be the only education the university student would receive. It was to form just a part, albeit

Even critics who are sympathetic to Callista cannot help but betray the feeling that the merits (if any) of Newman's second novel are pastoral or apologetic, rather than literary, and that its place in Newman's opus is minor at best. This essay will argue that Callista has been both undeservedly neglected and significantly misunderstood. Callista is an important work, possessing notable aesthetic merits and hig

Alas, like so many other book projects Newman commenced in the 1890s, the Berlioz biography was never completed. Even though sketches or drafts of the book do not survive, there is plenty of evidence of the methodology and structure that Newman proposed for the book, for a work-in-progress article, ‘The prose of Berlioz,’ was published in the Chord in June 18

This has initiated a retrieval of many valuable insights found in the classics that are extremely important for contemporary theology. Newman's Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine is such a classic. From the time of its publication in 1845, the Essay has been an important and influential work in the life of Catholic thought.
