Notch fatigue behavior of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy has been investigated under a load-controlled high cycle fatigue test. The S-N curve was kinked at the critical nominal stress amplitude, where the plastic deformation nucleated at notch root. The plastic zone size at the critical nominal stress amplitude was almost equal to the size of 4 grains of the present Ti-6Al-4V alloy, which were the same findings as in the 2024-T4 alloy used in the previous study. Above the critical nominal stress amplitude, the local stress ratio at notch root decreased with increasing nominal stress amplitude. The c

As the loading conditions for the railway vehicles are becoming more and more complex, nominal stress has been unable to fully satisfy the requirements for assessing fatigue strength for weld structures. Hot spots stress is much more closer to the actual stress of a weld structure, it can suit the demand of high speed trains’ fatigue evaluation better. In this paper, on the basis of UIC615-4 standard, the nominal stress of the welded bogie frame was calculated and its fatigue strength was assessed using FEA method. A differential form of Neuber’s rule, originally proposed by M. Chaudonneret, has been formulated for a generic viscoplastic notch problem, making extensive use of suitably normalised stress, strain and time. It has been shown that the stress-strain history at the root of a notch in a viscoplastic body can be determined directly from the elastic response, provided far-field viscoplastic strains can be neglected. Neuber’s rule has also been applied to the more general cases of stress and strain concentration at notches under (i) nominal creep conditions (constant nominal stress) and (ii) stress

AbstractConsidering interacted damage accumulations induced by corrosion, cyclic fatigue, and stress corrosion cracking, a phenomenological corrosion fatigue (CF) life evaluation formula has been proposed. A concept of nominal CF limit has been introduced, which indicates whether cyclic damage accumulation is active or not. It is found that cyclic fatigue damage accumulation enhanced by corrosion is the dominative damage under relatively high stress amplitudes (compared to the nominal limit), whereas, under low stress amplitudes, corrosion damage accumulation would become the dominative one. Therefore, the control of maximum crack width is replaced by control of nominal tensile stress of concrete, which shall be easier to realize in optimum design of concrete structures.

For simple geometries such as, plate with a hole, calculation of Kt from either closed form solution or from making simple but valid assumptions is possible [1,2].
