Abstract:
The diet an organism keeps is crucial in sustaining its health and fitness. The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster and the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans are excellent models for nutritional studies due to their small size, large progeny numbers, quick development, and modifiable laboratory diets. Here I examine these two organisms in order to better understand the complex interrelationship between an animal and its diet. Previous work has shown that in the wild numerous organisms are capable of selecting specific nutrients in a non-random manner in order to maximize fitness. However, the gene

It was found that a decrease of 10% or 50% of caribou or ringed seal will result in decreases for many key nutrients such as protein, zinc, and iron. Caloric restriction (CR) without malnutrition is a robust dietary intervention that extends lifespan and improves health in virtually every species studied. Recently, some of the mechanisms for the effects of CR on ageing have been elucidated, including several cellular master switches collectively called “nutrient sensing pathways”. CR is not sustainable in humans, therefore research has begun to focus on developing ad libitum-fed diets that maximise lifespan and healthspan.

Abstract   Introduction: Following a strict gluten-free diet means exclusion of many staple foods such as traditionally made bread, flour, pasta, and whole grain products that are largely included in the Swedish daily diet. Such exclusions of vital resources could have harmful consequences on nutritional status and cause nutritional hazard, if they are not substituted with appropriate alternatives.   Aim: To compare the nutrient and energy intakes of 14-year-old boys and girls on gluten free diet with their non-celiac counterparts as well as the estimated average requirement.   Method: All 14

The nutritional needs of people with a chronic mental illness have not been adequately defined. The present study attempted to evaluate the nutritional status and food skills of people with a chronic mental illness residing in congregate care and the community. Specific objectives included investigating whether standard anthropometric measurements could be used with people with a chronic mental illness, gathering nutrient intake and food skills data using appropriate assessment methods, estimating the prevalence of some nutrition related diseases, and conducting nutrition intervention programs

Abstract:
Over the past four decades, there has been an unprecedented increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity, contributing to the burden of chronic disease. The overarching aim of this thesis was to determine plausible dietary mechanisms for nutrient and nutrient combinations and weight gain, and to examine trends in the populations nutrient intakes between 1983 to 2012. A secondary aim was to focus on the socio-demographic determinants of poor dietary choices; first in the whole population and then in young adults. Secondly, trends in adult’s nutrient intakes were determined using the cro
