Having the Okupa Squat Tor?m, located in the neighborhood of Fatima in the southern city of Fortaleza-CE, as locus and observed through the ethnographic method, followed the social practices of urban segment. I invested in a data collection revealed that the custom of okupas and their domestic habits, inside and outside of okupa, emphasizing the interaction situations, like most appropriate occasions to observe the constant negotiation and refinement of his cunning to intervene in the city . Among the objectives of this research, the main thing is to observe which senses are assigned to the practice of the occupation by okupas. For this, reflecting from the specifics of this urban phenomenon and talking mostly with the tradition of research in the field of anthropology, I tried to address some issues regarding the practice of okupa??o and organization of the group, which the principles and movements that make these contacts with city etc. The appropriation made by the subjects on the urban space here means understanding them as a cultural expression of a number of collective values, resulting from experience and perception of okupas like themselves. The intention is to show how this practice intervention and collective action has appeared in contemporary times and how my ethnography can contribute to a dialogue on the practices of mobilization and update of the city, considering the Theory of Recognition Axel Honneth (2003) as an analytical category useful to describe the forms of reciprocity experienced by okupas

Abstract:
This investigation explore about the cultural manifestations of the squatting in a house of Santiago de Chile.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis critiques the system of sex and gender that shapes the iconographic discourse underlying the portrayal of women in comic books. It examines the generalised use of the female body as the slate on which social meaning of all kinds is inscribed and codified in language that is androcentric and consumption-based; and it considers how this has been perpetuated by repetition, occupying and modelling the representation of women in their absence. While the voices of women cartoonists are drowned out in the vacuum of silence generated by this male discourse, the bodies of the heroine, vampiress, superwoman, mega-vixen and female figure of evil remain the indispensable commercial icons that are used as bait to attract male readers. However hard they try to overcome gender roles, women cartoonists still face various difficulties, including the lack of space in professional terms and the difficulty of portraying themselves as they really are when the territory of their body and its meaning have been taken hostage by an alien discourse. The misogyny that dominates the mainstream comic book is also reflected in this genre’s counterculture, where the female body has generally been used to serve the purposes of male liberation, either because male authors have appropriated women’s voices and perpetuated female stereotypes or because their restructuring of gender models has basically been transgressive. The age-old discourse simply reinforces itself, hiding old biases under new disguises and continuing to “occupy” the artefact “woman”. Against the backdrop of this historical “occupation” of the silenced female body, the thesis also examines the scarcity of women’s voices in the adult comic industry. Its research area is the panorama which historically constitutes the imaginary of the Spanish comic. The thesis describes, in historical terms, how this “occupation” has hampered the emergence of an independent discourse for women cartoonists and how this has made the mainstream commercial comic a markedly male-oriented medium. It also considers the growing sense of emergency being experienced in certain pockets of resistance to the stereotypes of the mainstream. At the same time, the thesis also retraces the activities of women cartoonists in Spain from the time of the Second Spanish Republic to the present, revealing our need to establish a genealogy of self-representation in the battle against stereotypes and a plural iconographic language created by bodies that speak for themselves, liberated from occupation.

Feinberg, Matthew Isaiah. "LAVAPIÉS, MADRID AS TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY URBAN SPECTACLE." UKnowledge, 2011. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/gradschool_diss/216.

Full text
Abstract:
Informed by the theories of Henri Lefebvre regarding the production of space and the theories of scale found in current scholarship in Cultural Geography, my methodology analyzes both dramatic texts and theater spaces to investigate how cultural production and capital converge in the “spectacle” of urban space. While employing this term “spectacle” to describe how dramatic texts, theater productions, and modern architecture transform the urban landscape into a metaphoric theater space for the production of local, national, and global identities, this project examines the relationship between theater and urban change in Lavapiés, an iconic, multicultural, and oftenunderserved neighborhood located in the Embajadores district of Madrid, Spain. Against the historical backdrop of the neighborhood’s long and important relationship with theater and theater spaces from the seventeenth century onwards, I analyze a range of urban spectacles taking place in Madrid between 1997 and 2006. This analysis includes close readings of contemporary plays that represent the urban space of Lavapiés and Madrid, an analysis of the architecture of power articulated in the the municipal government’s Plan General de Ordenación Urbana de Madrid 1997 [Plan for Urban Development for Madrid 1997] and the recently constructed Teatro Valle-Inclán Centro Dramático Nacional [National Drama Center]. Finally, I look at the cultural activities of the squatters (okupas) of the Laboratorio 03 who between 2002 and 2003 transformed an abandoned warehouse into a space for art, theater, and cyber resistance that sought to shatter the illusion of capitalist spectacle projected by the gleaming steel and glass of the new condominiums and cultural institutions represented by the aforementioned Teatro Valle-Inclán. Overall, this project looks to this range of traditional and nontraditional texts to illustrate how Madrid’s historical dynamic between urban space, power, and theater continues to be manifested in the contemporary spectacle of Lavapiés.

Ergn, Saliha. "UNICEF and ministry of education girls' education project in turkey: "Haydi Kizlar Okula?" Did it work? What is the aftermath?" Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/47518.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates whether the girls' education project "Haydi Kzlar Okula!" was able to increase girls' schooling and to what extent it was effective. In Turkey, there is still gender disparity in primary education although it is compulsory. "Haydi Kzlar Okula!" is UNICEF and Turkish Ministry of Education's joint project, which aims to increase girls' primary enrollment. The project consists of increasing public awareness, free books and incentives (in the form of conditional cash transfer) for female students. To find the magnitude of the program's impact, data is collected from Turkish and European statistical databases and a panel data analysis is employed. The results show that if the program has been implemented in a province, girls' enrollment rate increases by 1.310-2 units and total schooling increases by 1.410-2 units. Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) found to have a bigger impact on girls' enrollment rates than total enrollment rates but the impact is not statistically significant. When a dummy for poverty is included in the model, then CCT becomes significant and the impact can be interpreted as; 1% increase in the conditional cash paid to a province results in 1.310-4 units increase in girls' enrollment rates. It is concluded that the project's impact is statistically significant but the magnitude is smaller than expected. Improvements are needed for increasing the effectiveness of the project. New cash transfer schemes should be implemented and community contribution should be encouraged. Another result of the analysis show that school buildings and adult literacy have greater impacts than the girls' education project.

And if it is, how does it happen? This question guided a dialogue between academic and activist voices in the process of doing this work. Through the academic voices, Chapter 1 presents a way of understanding power and emancipation nowadays. Chapter 2 presents the situated knowledge episthemological view (Haraway, 1995), and with this base, the constructive exchange method. As a part of the activist voices, chapter 3 discusses coexistance through two experiences with an equalitarian interest in Catalonia: the Les naus squat and Coop57 Ethical and solidarity financing cooperative. Chapter 4 relates the collective life of two equalitarian experiences in Venezuela - the Santo Domingo Brazil Cooperative and People 94.5 FM Community Radio . After that encounter, the research question is revisited. First, a temporary and situated understanding of power and emancipation is presented: Of power, trying to comprehend some dynamics that initiatives like these must take care of, so they avoid staying trapped in them; and of emancipation, to understand how can they do it and create new forms of life. Chapter 5, consequently, uses chapter 1 to review of the concepts of power, domination and control. Through this, it proposes power-domination-control as a way of capturing collective potencial, aiming to touch everything and everybody in everyday life, and to do this in multiple and complex ways, which could seem as incoherent between them. It tends to operate ungrounded, without having a center and expanding itself to all of society, and that is what justifies the importance of situating it. Chapter 6 proposes emancipation as a process, or a micro-process of squatting (not invading, but occupying what was ours and was taken from us). Squatting spaces of endless possibilities, that can articulate themselves in ways of struggle in a bigger scale, are constructed in resistance processes in an everyday practical way, in molecular revolution experiences (Guattari, 1984). It is proposed to look at everyday life, place, action and time in an active way, and also defends the importance of anarchist practices in constructing emancipation. For a possible conclusion, chapter 7 discuss initiatives as an alternative of the hegemonic words of group and organization ; it then proposes four methods, or key practices which could serve temporarily to answer the question of how equalitarian initiatives work in control societies, by looking at these very different experiences of four initiatives to get an overall understanding

Abstract:
This research project began as an ethnographic and photographic testimony of the way of living in a squatter in Portugal, a community of young adults who took over an abandoned place to live and to organize leisure activities, open to the exterior. Without knowing, this work turned out to be the story of the last living months of that squat, one of the longest resisting to eviction. My testimony is exposed through the complement of photographs with descriptive text. I also took the liberty of framing scientifically the concept of squat, something that has hardly been done in Portugal, and of laying methodological foundations for one of the possible uses of Photography as a method of research, analysis, and presentation of results in Anthropology. To justify my photoethnographic method, I wrote a chapter to recollect, historically, the different ways Photography and Anthropology crossed each other. This research project is presented in 87 photographs and text – circa 38000 words -, made by the author, and with the help of 12 illustrations.
