El objetivo de este trabajo es plantear que la obra de Jorge Luis Borges es una excepción en el derrotero de los discursos orientalistas que han estado en auge desde el siglo XIX en Latinoamérica. Destacaremos el criterio de selección de representaciones y textos arábigo-persas para Historia de la eternidad (1936), cuyo resultado es una nueva representación del Otro como un sujeto activo, histórico, productor de conocimiento y poseedor de una fuerte tradición intelectual. De esta manera, Borges se aparta de la concepción orientalista argentina que se nutrió del orientalismo europeo.
