This thesis analyzes Shirin Neshat’s Women of Allah photographs by exploring key socio-political events that have shaped Iranian history since the reign of Cyrus the Great, ca. 600 B.C. This thesis is about the life and work of Gertrude Bell, a British woman born in the late nineteenth century, whose extensive knowledge of Middle East cultures and people won her a job as the Oriental Secretary in Iraq after World War One. Modern historians, including Toby Dodge and Edward Said, consider Bell to be an irredeemable orientalist, one whose work is only ethnocentric and essentialist. These were largely male garments in India at the time, which became popular dress accessories for British women. This thesis examines the experiences of British soldiers and sailors during Britain’s military intervention in Egypt between 1798 and 1801. The operations which took place in these years have been examined in the literature from strategic and geopolitical perspectives, but they have not been appreciated in the context of travel writing or orientalism. This thesis considers whether the British armed forces were contributors to orientalism. Although military personnel were not ordinary travel writers or orientalists, they were undoubtedly influenced by popular travel and orientalist literature.

This thesis provides an analysis of the films Chinatown (1974) and Blade Runner (1982) on the basis of three characteristics. Both films stem from the tradition of film noir. While there is debate over the use of the term as a genre category, it is widely agreed to refer to a specific period of cinema between 1940 and the late 1950s from which these two films draw stylistic inspiration. This thesis aims to shed light on the collection of Oriental manuscripts at the Uppsala University Library Carolina Rediviva and how the collection is a part of the collective memory. The main question which is central for this thesis is: have orientalism and structures of power influenced the acquisition, arrangement and methods of accessability regarding the Oriental manuscripts?
