A narrow range of Byzantine texts, primarily chronographic ones, containing classical themes and images, were translated in Russia starting from the 11th century.These texts became the literary basis of secular and ecclesiastic art. Several iconographic motifs from mythological stories and the “Ascension of Alexander the Great” entered the art of pre-Mongol Russian. During the sixteenth century, the princes of Moldavia, a region of modern Romania, built many churches and monasteries. These churches followed the typical Byzantine style by placing detailed frescos on the interior walls, but some of the Moldavian churches took that tradition even further and expanded the frescos to the façade. This thesis argues that these exterior images were used to enhance the Easter processionals that occurred around the churches. While most scholars explain this phenomenon as propaganda or a cry for help against the Ottoman Empire, a new interpretation is offered here.

Abstract:

This article discusses a significant element of the religious sound- scape of the Orthodox communities in the Balkans, the call to mass. The period between the Byzantine reconquest of Constantinople (1261) and the death of the Serbian King Milutin (1282–1321) witnessed the expansion of bell ringing in churches and monasteries while the semantron, the tradition- al instrument of the Byzantine Church, continued to be employed.
