Otomi (Oto-Pamean, Oto-Manguean) is a small group of languages spoken in Mexico which has emerged as a linguistic family in recent times. In this paper, I study relevant changes in the number system of the Otomi languages. These changes constitute an interesting object of study to gain a better understanding of two main phenomena: aspects of language change involving the loss of the dual number; and the constraints on number agreement restricted to conjoining structures. I show that changes in the number system in the Otomi family have different outcomes depending on the dialectal area. Such o

All Chinantec languages (central Oto-Manguean) have non-modal phonation, meaning laryngealization or breathy and creaky voice. In certain languages, another contrast is observed known as ‘ ballisticity,’ which Herrera (2000) qualifies as a realization of final breathy voice. In this paper, I bring together the non-modal phonation system and this third type of laryngeal contrast by analyzing the phonological and grammatical statuses of each type of laryngeal realization. By using a model inspired by methods in structural dialectology proposed by Uriel Weinrich in 1954, I propose a model of the

Abstract This paper tackles issues that involve distinguishing clefts from other monoclausal focus constructions when describing the syntax of lesser-known languages. I concentrate on Tilapa Otomi, which is, morphologically speaking, the most conservative language of the Otomi family from Mexico (Oto-Pamean; Oto-Manguean). I propose that Tilapa Otomi has (at least) two specialized focus constructions: one that is a biclausal, and which I analyze as a cleft construction, and another that is monoclausal, and it is thus not a cleft but which could be superficially mistaken to be a cleft with a ze

AbstractNew evidence is presented in support of the hypothesis that Proto-Uto-Aztecan (PUA) was spoken by a community of cultivators in the northwest quadrant of Mesoamerica. New cognates are presented in support of reconstructions of meanings of PUA words within the maize-cultivation domain. It is argued that some of this vocabulary was borrowed from an Otomanguean language, perhaps Proto-Oto-Chinantecan. In addition, it is argued that PUA included a vocabulary in the domain of pottery. New reconstructions of a pottery lexicon are proposed, and arguments that this vocabulary was borrowed from

This thesis argues for a constructivist reading of Gilles Deleuze's early philosophy. In the introduction I outline why I consider Deleuze's philosophical project - from the 1950s to the 1990s - to centre on the problem of immanence (the "plane of immanence"), which for Deleuze is inseparable from its "construction" by various means, including language. The term "onto-logic" is used to capture this notion of immanence as constructed by language, and I claim that "univocal sense" is the name of this immanence during Deleuze' s 1960s works. Golog is a high-level action programming language for controlling autonomous agents such as mobile robots. It is defined on top of a logic-based action theory expressed in the Situation Calculus. Before a program is deployed onto an actual robot and executed in the physical world, it is desirable, if not crucial, to verify that it meets certain requirements (typically expressed through temporal formulas) and thus indeed exhibits the desired behaviour. However, due to the high (first-order) expressiveness of the language, the corresponding verification problem is in general undecidable. In this
