Otomi (Oto-Pamean, Oto-Manguean) is a small group of languages spoken in Mexico which has emerged as a linguistic family in recent times. In this paper, I study relevant changes in the number system of the Otomi languages. These changes constitute an interesting object of study to gain a better understanding of two main phenomena: aspects of language change involving the loss of the dual number; and the constraints on number agreement restricted to conjoining structures. I show that changes in the number system in the Otomi family have different outcomes depending on the dialectal area. Such o

All Chinantec languages (central Oto-Manguean) have non-modal phonation, meaning laryngealization or breathy and creaky voice. In certain languages, another contrast is observed known as ‘ ballisticity,’ which Herrera (2000) qualifies as a realization of final breathy voice. In this paper, I bring together the non-modal phonation system and this third type of laryngeal contrast by analyzing the phonological and grammatical statuses of each type of laryngeal realization. By using a model inspired by methods in structural dialectology proposed by Uriel Weinrich in 1954, I propose a model of the

I concentrate on Tilapa Otomi, which is, morphologically speaking, the most conservative language of the Otomi family from Mexico (Oto-Pamean; Oto-Manguean). I propose that Tilapa Otomi has (at least) two specialized focus constructions: one that is a biclausal, and which I analyze as a cleft construction, and another that is monoclausal, and it is thus not a cleft but which could be superficially mistaken to be a cleft with a ze

It is argued that some of this vocabulary was borrowed from an Otomanguean language, perhaps Proto-Oto-Chinantecan. In addition, it is argued that PUA included a vocabulary in the domain of pottery. Background: Significant hearing loss is one of the most common major abnormalities present at birth. Screening for hearing loss in new-born is based on two concepts. First, a critical period exists for optimal language skills to develop, and Second, earlier intervention produces better outcomes. Methods: A two-stage screening protocol, in which new-born are screened first with two staged Transient Evoked Oto-acoustic Emissions TEOAE, using handheld TEOAE device, followed by confirmation with Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR). The objective was to study the incidence of hearing impairment in “he

Ontologies are becoming increasingly important as a knowledge-based resource for man and machines. Ontology is a veritable tool in computing for representing and thus preserving, domain knowledge for both human and machine processing. This paper builds a foundational ontology for Nigerian languages. Each language is annotated with its location information showing geo-political zone, states, and places where the Language originates. The ontology of Nigerian languages was built using the Methontology approach and specifically created using the Protégé 5.5.0 OWL editor. The Ontology was built on

Our longitudinal studies of bilingual Dutch–French, German–French, and German–Italian children show that the bilingual children behave like monolingual children regarding the type of object omissions in the Romance languages. They differ from monolingual children with respect to the extent to which object drop is used. At the same time, the children differentiate the two systems they are using. This paper is a corpus-based contrastive study of one particular semantic area — the modification of nouns — and the grammatical structures available in English and Spanish to actualize this particular meaning within the scope of the NP. Two large monolingual reference corpora, one in each language, have been used to extract the empirical data on which to base the analysis. A functional approach has been followed, starting from perceived similarities in meaning and trying to reveal the subtle links between particular semantic functions and the structures most commonly employed by native speake

In natural communication, the medium through which language is transmitted plays an important and systematic role. Sentences are broken up rhythmically into chunks; certain elements receive special stress; and, in spoken language, intonational tunes are superimposed onto these chunks in particular ways — all resulting in an intricate system of prosody. Investigations of prosody in Israeli Sign Language demonstrate that sign languages have comparable prosodic systems to those of spoken languages, although the phonetic medium is completely different. The choice of language for literary creation is not a simple one, especially for African writers. Having grown up in a naturally multilingual environment and exposed to European languages, they often express themselves in the language of former colonizers. However, this is neither obvious nor should it remain a definitive choice for authors from various African countries. We will present different motivations, attitudes, and decisions of several writers; from the most radical, rejecting the European language, to others who hold onto it – either exclusively or accompanied by African languages.

Based on semantic similarity links, the model constructs a map that represents a word in the source language. Then the algorithm projects the map values onto a space in the target language. The new space abides by the semantic similarity links specific to the second language. Then the two maps are projected onto the same plane in order to detect overlapping values.
