Abstract:
Considerable evidence supports a role for vasopressin (VP) as a local regulator of steroidogenesis in rat testes. I show that rat testes contain three distinct VP gene-related transcripts differing in size from the hypothalamic VP mRNA. Two of these transcripts contain exons B and C, but not the exon that encodes the nonapeptide VP. Hence, these transcripts are incapable of generating testicular irVP. The third transcript possesses exon A-like sequences, probably originating from expression of a VP-related gene. This transcript may encode the VP-like peptide that has been detected in testicula

Aggressive behavior in dogs poses public health and animal welfare concerns, however the biological mechanisms regulating dog aggression are not well understood. We first validated enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) for the measurement of free (unbound) and total (free + bound) OT and AVP in dog plasma. G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) are major pharmaceutical drug targets due to their crucial role in cell signalling. The neurohypophysial peptide hormones [Arg⁸] vasopressin (AVP) and oxytocin (OT) signal through a subfamily of GPCRs, comprising the AVP receptors (V₁a R, V₁bR and V₂R) and the OT receptor (OTR). The aim of this work was to understand the molecular basis of receptor activation by defining exact contacts between agonist and receptor. Molecular modelling suggested that two conserved negatively-charged residues may be important for agonist binding and receptor activation. Intera

Little is known for the function of neuronal dendrites, especially the mechanism for peptide release. Abstract:
The process of protein and RNA folding has been understood in general terms through the principle of minimal frustration, and is usually thought of as being guided by a folding funnel on the energy landscape, which is based around the native structure. However, more recently, various biomolecules have been associated with multifunnel energy landscapes, where each funnel exhibits a distinct structural ensemble and function. This work explores how the principle of minimal frustration may be extended to multifunnel energy landscapes that are associated with multifunctional biomolecules. To achiev

Abstract:
The duplication of genes followed by selection is perhaps the most prominent way in which molecular biological systems gain multiplicity, diversity and functional complexity in evolution. Whole genome duplications (WGDs) therefore have the potential of generating an extraordinary amount of evolutionary innovation. It is now accepted that the vertebrate lineage has gone through two rounds of WGD in its early stages, after the divergence of invertebrate chordates and before the emergence of jawed vertebrates. These basal vertebrate WGDs are called 2R for two rounds of whole genome duplication. A
