Abstract:
This thesis explores the relationship between inhalation amplitude and turn-taking in spontaneous multiparty conversations held in Estonian. Respiratory activity is recorded with Respiratory Inductance Plethysmography. The main focus is on how inhalation amplitude varies between the inhalations produced directly before turn onset compared to the following inhalations within the same speaking turn. The results indicate a significant difference in amplitude, realised mainly by an increase in inhalation end lung volume values. One of the possible functions of this pattern is to signal an intentio

When spontaneous breathing (SB) is allowed during mechanical ventilation (MV), atelectatic lung areas are recruited and oxygenation improves thereby. Whether unsupported SB at its natural pattern (without PEEP and at low pressure/small tidal volume) equally recruits and improves oxygenation, and if so by which mechanism, has not been studied. A porcine lung collapse model was designed to study this question. The cardiac output dependency of the pulmonary shunt was investigated with healthy lungs and with major shunt (during one-lung ventilation) and with SB, MV and continuous positive airway p

Abstract:
Two important areas of physics are spontaneous pattern formation and droplet motion on surfaces. These two areas can be brought together since the texture of a surface can influence its wetting properties. Therefore by controlling the factors that determine the length scales of the patterns during spontaneous pattern formation, it is possible to design surfaces with very specific wetting properties. This was used to create surfaces that could direct the motion of sessile water droplets. Patterned surfaces with micro-wrinkled surface structures were prepared by thermally evaporating thin Alumin

The seminal work published by Alan Turing in 1952 provides the framework for our understanding of spontaneous pattern emergence in Nature. In this thesis, Turing’s universal mechanism is applied to a range of distinct nonlinear optical cavities. Of principal interest is a Fabry-Pérot (FP) resonator, which comprises a th

The proposed general mechanisms for rhythmogenesis are often attributed to intrinsic and synaptic properties. In such theories, a slow recovery process is essential for the slow dynamics associated with bursting. This thesis presents a new hypothesis that depends on the connecti

We calculated the fractal dimension of the optical patterns generated by optical modulation instability (MI). By calculating the fractal dimension, we found that at low intensity threshold, MI patterns can be regard as fractals due to its self-similar structure. We also found that as the voltage applied to the nonlinear crystal increases, the fractal dimension decreases. The decreasing rate is equal among different laser beam intensity. Finally, we found that the f
