The present thesis analyses the extensive utilisation of Qur'anic materials by Unsuri, Farrukhi, Manuchehri, Abu 'l-Faraj-i Runi and Anvari, and seeks to determine the degree to which it may be seen as a particular thematic development within Persian poetry-rather than as part of a literary tradition developed from Arabic models. Female identity in Sylvia Plath’s Ariel collection (first published in 1965) is a complex site of being and becoming within a 1950s culture of performance. From a twenty-first century perspective, this dissertation bridges traditional and contemporary readings of Plath and the Plath archive through a referencing of motifs such as celebrity, ‘the gaze’, ventriloquism and clothing. Examines the character construction of the Hesiodic ‘farmer’ in the scholarship of Works and Days. Questions Hesiod’s intimacy of agricultural knowledge: was he a practical farmer or a non-farming poet?
