Abstract:
Analytical models have been used here to conduct detailed studies on the elastoplastic response of rectangular plates subjected to normal impact of a rigid sphere. Analytical models have been derived using a complete modelling approach in which the equations of motion of the contacting bodies (i.e. the plate and spherical impactor) and a compliance law for the local contact mechanics are used to formulate the impact model. To account for the local contact mechanics, a novel Meyer-type compliance model based on elastic-elastoplastic-fully plastic material behaviour has been formulated and valid

In this thesis, it is aimed to determine the ballistic limit thicknesses of ST-37 steel plates under oblique impact of bullets having hard steel core (DIN 100Cr6 at 61-62 HRc) by using both experimental and numerical methods. In experimental part, angles of attack of the bullets are changed from 0 to 70 degrees by 10 degrees increments. Bullet velocities are measured for each shot just before the impact and they are found to be between 790-830 m/s. The minimum plate thickness that is not perforated and the maximum plate thickness that is perforated are determined by conducting three shots for

With increasing demands to build fast vessels of lighter weight, shipbuilders are more concerned with noise and vibration problems in ships than ever. The objective of this thesis is to study the vibration response of coupled structures, in the hope that the study may shed some light in understanding the general features of ship vibration. An important feature characterizing the vibration in complex structures is the input mobility, as it describes the capacity of structures in accepting vibration energy from

Abstract:
This thesis addresses the problem of the numerical simulation of the shear band or 'plugging' mode of failure in metallic solids. Particular reference is made to the normal impact between blunt projectiles and circular plates of thin to intermediate thickness. The thesis presents a two dimensional axisymmetric and plane strain finite element computer program related to the Lagrangian reference frame. A four node element with one point quadrature and associated stabilisation is utilised, and is shown to be superior to standard isoparametric implementations when applied within an explicit time i

The thesis addresses the issue of possible debonding of faces of a sandwich plate under hail-like impact conditions. The interface stresses are considered responsible for the debonding, and to design against this possibility, it is necessary to determine them correctly. The problem is addressed by constructing a FE program to accomplish the following tasks. (i) To analyse a circular sandwich plate as a three dimensional axisymmetric structure, supported at periphery and subjected to a central static load equivalent to the dynamic impact load. Abstract:
In the Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) field, the Acoustic Emission (AE) technique is a passive method by which damage is localized and identified by capturing Lamb Waves (LW) signals propagating in a plate-like structure. The reconstruction of emitted signals from damage at the source location constitutes one of the main challenges faced by the SHM community. Recently, the application of a Frequencies Compensation Transfer Function (FCTF) has been used to reconstruct narrowband and broadband signals through a hybrid experimental and numerical Time Reversal (TR) process on aluminum plates.

La démarche habituelle de l'analyse de ces surfaces est basée sur des hypothèses fortes concernant leurs comportements. L'objectif principal de ces travaux est de développer une méthode permettant d'étudier l'influence des défauts de forme sur les performances des assemblages. Abstract:
A ballistic limit equation for hypervelocity impact on thin plates is derived analytically. This equation applies to cases of impulsive impact on a plate that is protected by a multi-shock shield, and is valid in the range of velocity above 6 km/s. Experimental tests were conducted at the NASA Johnson Space Center on square aluminum plates. Comparing the center deflections of these plates with the theoretical deflections of a rigid-plastic plate subjected to a blast load, one determines the dynamic yield strength of the plate material. A Primary objective of the present research is the development of robust CAE (Computer-Aided Engineering)-based approaches for designing armour plates subjected to ballistic impact by small-calibre hardened peojectiles with or without a protective sheath. Amongst the challenges in simulation is the capturing of target plate material behaviour at high strain rates with possibilities of adiabatic heating. A comprehensive numerical study carried out has resulted in the identification of simulation guidelines using a commercially available explicit finite element anlaysis solver (viz. LS_DYNA). Th
