'Implicature' denotes a communicative strategy in which a reader must infer the primary meaning of an utterance from that utterance's relationship to its context, rather than 'decode' explicitly presented information. In listening to members of different cultures, it is possible to feel bad, even while recognising that the speaker is trying to speak politely. Sometimes we do not feel very comfortable with someone else’s speech, even though their expressions might be very polite with the choice of specific linguistic forms to show a high level of formality such as terms of address and specific types of formulaic expression such as ' I (don 't) think ... This study aims to analyze explicit politeness markers such as please and thank you in children’s movies using The Movie Corpus. Differences in use over time as well as between children’s movies and other genres of film are investigated, by extracting a variety of frequencies from the corpus for further analysis. The results show that politeness markers are, and have tended to be, more common in children’s movies than in other genres of film. Previous studies in the field have suggested that speech acts are underrepresented in EFL textbooks and that, in addition, these tend to have little or no presentation of meta-pragmatic information. In relation to these findings, the present study investigated the extent and manner in which speech acts are presented in EFL textbooks currently used in the Swedish upper secondary school. The focus was limited to explicit teaching of speech acts and, thus, does not present any information or findings concerning implicit teaching of speech acts or to what extent this is presented in the textbooks.
