The ethic of care in nursing presupposes a narrative understanding of patients in vulnerable situations. This ethic has both has both reciprocal and protective ethical dimensions. The ethics of reciprocity guides the relationship between nurses and patients such that each influences the other toward a good life and thereby helps to create an ethical narrative. A protective ethic calls for protecting the patient’s identity and responding to predicaments in which the dignity of the person is threatened. In particular, nurses are sometimes asked to provide existential advocacy for their patients.

From a consideration of general, colloquial use it would seem that 'to nurse' is to support, protect, preserve and nurture it, and this requires a commitment on the part of the one nursing, an investment of self for the well-be

It is a bona fide and stand-alone branch of applied professional ethics specific to understanding the responsibilities of the profession and its members. Support for the argument is derived from prior literature, the author’s own research, practice experiences, and the contemporary sociopolitical context of healthcare. Abstract Classical healthcare ethics generated by the health professions centers on the maxim that the health professional should do what will benefit the patient according to the professional’s ability and judgment. In the modern healthcare ethics of the 20th century, this faced four problems: basing patient benefit on the individual clinician’s judgment; excluding the interests of others; giving benefits and harms priority over moral rights; and assuming that the health professional can be expected to know the patient’s interests.
