This thesis explores the perceived relationship between spirituality and psychiatric medication use in individuals living with severe mental health problems. The biological approach to mental health treatment is the dominant paradigm of care across the Western world, which justifies the use of psychopharmacology as a first-line therapy. In the last 30 years, the steady rise in the use of prescription medications has generated much debate and controversy. and senkyunolide A were found as the three major compounds in all herbal samples investigated. In addition, great variations in both total and individual content of each of the ten main components investigated were observed in samples of different origins and those collected from a GAP developing base in the same or different years, suggesting the necessity of a thorough quality control for Rhizoma Chuanxiong.
Extraction of the main ingredients from Rhizoma Chuanxiong by supercritical fluid extraction using CO2 was investigated. An appropriate SCFE method for Chuanxiong was developed with t

Abstract:
Venoms are complex mixtures of biological macromolecules and other compounds that are used for predatory and defensive purposes by hundreds of thousands of known species worldwide. Throughout human history, venoms and venom components have been used to treat a vast array of illnesses, causing them to be of great clinical, economic, and academic interest to the drug discovery and toxinology communities. In spite of major computational advances that facilitate data-driven drug discovery, most therapeutic venom effects are still discovered via tedious trial-and-error, or simply by accident. In th

Dissertação de Mestrado, Qualidade em Análises, Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade do Algarve. Centro de Química Estrutural Complexo I, Instituto Superior Técnico, 2012
