Measuring performance is a necessary management practice if action is to result in desired outcomes. An important objective of the New Zealand public sector reforms that started in the late 1980s, was to focus the attention of public servants on clear specified results rather than bureaucratic procedures. Based on an implicit assumption that all public sector organisations are of a production nature, the reforms promised greater efficiency within the public sector by holding managers accountable for results while providing them with greater freedom to allocate resources. Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2011.<br>Healthcare systems of the world’s poorer nations have been heavily impacted by economic globalisation. This has resulted in a steady deterioration of working conditions, resulted in less job security and has led to an increase in the spread of communicable diseases in developing countries such as South Africa. It is factors such as these, against the backdrop of a global recession, that have contributed to the escalation in global healthcare costs which has itself augmented the strain on already strained hospital resources in developing e

Abstract:
Continuous improvement (CI) is a never-ending effort to improve an organisation's activities that requires management and employee commitment. Abstract:
Public Service Motivation (PSM) has become one of the most prominent and widely used theoretical models to explain employee psychology and behaviours in the public sector. It theorises that higher levels of PSM lead to positive outcomes for public service employees, such as greater job satisfaction, stronger organisational commitment and lower intention to quit. However, these relationships have not been confirmed consistently in different national contexts, and the exact role of PSM in shaping employee attitudes and behaviours is still being explored. Because of this, PSM researchers increasi

Abstract:
This thesis examines attempts to improve the efficiency of local authority bureaucracies during the 1980's. A number of significant policy initiatives such as the establishment of the Audit Commission, the pressure for local authorities to implement systems of performance measurement and the introduction of performance related pay schemes reflect this quest for improved value for money. Two major hypotheses within this literature are identified; bureaus are inefficient because
