Abstract:
Using conversational data from an ethnographic study of a quilting guild, this article examines the way narratives are used to situate quilted objects and techniques by indexing particular alignment frames for the viewer recipient. As a community of practice, the quilting guild provides an excellent interactional context to explore how narratives are used to construct and reinforce community practices. Working within the framework of conversation analysis, the study found that quilters utilized narratives argumentatively to support specific characterizations of quilted objects and quilting tec

Special-interest titles represent a dynamic sector of the Australian magazine industry, yet few studies have been undertaken on them or their histories. Quilt-making titles serve as a case study of one of the most successful special-interest categories – craft – and special-interest magazines more generally. By tracing the evolution of magazines for quilters and by taking as its premise the rhetorical function of magazines in forming communities, this article illustrates the symbiotic interaction between publishing histories, including the exploitation of new technologies, and the sense of sel

This article discusses the informal learning processes of a quilting community, located in Aotearoa New Zealand, as participants engage in a collaborative textile project. Few studies have investigated everyday quilters’ collective learning processes, even though communal quiltmaking has been undertaken over the centuries. The concept of zone of proximal development (zpd) is extended as a ‘collective zone of proximal development’ where people are doing something together. This ethnographic study views quiltmaking as a sociocultural activity, and emphasizes the situated nature of knowing within

The exhibit QuiltSpeak: Uncovering Women’s Voices Through Quilts provides a model for using material culture research to unearth the experiences of marginalized historical actors. Each of the forty quilts from the North Carolina Museum of History’s permanent collection displayed in QuiltSpeak—made by a racially and economically diverse selection of quilters from the past two hundred years—served as a portal into a woman’s life and a representation of her self-expression. Abstract This essay examines two narrative quilts made in 2021 and 2022 by Black- and white-descendant communities in Alabama working together to memorialize names of enslaved persons drawn from previously un-transcribed antebellum Baptist church records, as well as from participants’ own recollections of enslaved persons associated with their families. The essay uses interviews to document the quilters’ experiences in sewing these quilts, describes the quilts’ construction and imagery, and argues that these works represent a quiet but powerful counter-memorial to the state’s ubiquitous stone

Layered graphs find use in many applications today, including flow charts, business processes, and genealogical diagrams. Traditional means of depicting this data are similar to depictions of unlayered node-link graphs, with each layer's nodes grouped into a line. This type of diagram becomes increasingly difficult to use as the number of nodes and links increases, presenting a scalability issue. We suggest quilted graphs as a better scaling alternative to traditional depictions. Throughout history, patchwork-quilting has been used to tell stories, hide messages and hold histories. Abstract:
A solution framework using Hamiltonian paths and strand grids (HAMSTR) is presented for three-dimensional flows on overset and hybrid meshes. The methodology creates a volume mesh starting from an unstructured surface mesh that can be comprised of mixed triangular-quadrilateral elements. "Linelets" through the meshes are found in a robust manner and the solver uses line-implicit schemes and high-order reconstruction schemes along these linelets, similar to a structured solver. The mesh system is also extended to utilize overset meshes. This overset technique allows for multiple mesh systems, w
