Diagnostic assessment of EFL writing ability is useful yet seldom adopted for Chinese EFL students. In line with this urge, this study intends to design and validate a diagnostic rating scale for EFL writing in China. This rating scale is adapted from China’s Standards of English Language Ability (CSE in short) for an argumentative writing assignment of College English III students at a key university in Eastern China. To collect data for validation, four raters were asked to score 67 compositions utilizing the rating scale. A multi-facet Rasch analysis was employed to investigate th

This paper presents the impact of the first large-scale randomized evaluation of the OLPC program, using data collected after 15 months of implementation in 319 primary schools in rural Peru. The results indicate that the program increased the ratio of computers per student from 0.12 to 1.18 in treatment schools. This expansion in access translated into substantial increases in use both at school and at home. No evidence is found of effects on enr

Abstract:
This work investigates the effect of the yield-to-tensile strength ratio (Y/T) has on the mechanical damage tolerances of steel pipelines subject to high strain loading conditions. The work includes full-scale tests and the development of an analytical model for calculating longitudinal tensile strain capacity. The tests were designed to simulate the type of loading that occurs in a pipeline subjected to a significant ground movement event, and they involved pressurized tension tests on short, full pipe sections that contained artificially-manufactured, circumferentially-oriented dent-gouge d

Abstract:
Utilizing trace element or stable isotope analysis has proven to be an effective means to characterize early life history and large-scale movement patterns in fishes. Target species are assessed for analyte concentrations occurring in calcified hard structures and compared to signatures noted from associated watersheds. Our objective was to establish a trace element signature profile for major tributaries occurring within the Mississippi River Valley (MRV). Unfiltered water samples were obtained from 49 stations from Dubuque, IA downstream to Gramercy, LA (1387 river miles) from July through D

Abstract:
This project focused on quantifying the reference stress to be used in predictive models for assessing the effects of metal loss on pipeline integrity. The results of this project will work in concert with the outcomes of project EC-2-7 that examined sources of scatter in metal-loss predictions with respect to the metal-loss defect geometry. The methodology for developing a new reference stress included empirical and finite element analyses along with comparison of full-scale experimental results that indicate the failure behavior of defect-free pipe has dependence on the strain hardening rate
