This research introduces the proposition that Electronic Dance Music’s beat-mixing function could be implemented to create immediacy in other musical genres. The inclusion of rhythmic sections at the beginning and end of each musical work created a ‘DJ friendly’ environment. The term used in this thesis to refer to the application of beat-mixing in Rock music is ‘ClubRock’. Collaboration between a number of DJs and Rock music professionals applied the process of beat-mixing to blend Rock tracks to produce a continuous ClubRock set. Since rock became the subject of academic study, its attendant ideology has been scrutinised and its mythical and Romantic components exposed. Largely absent from this account has been a thorough analysis of the phenomenon of the ‘band’. The role of individual acts and the wider contexts in which they worked has been discussed at the expense of an examination of an important form of music-making. This thesis seeks to address that gap. Using a mixture of literary research and ethnography, I present an overall picture of the band as a modus operandum, charting its evolution during the emergence

Alternative culture saw heavy-metal style as a symbol for the masculinist values that seem to underlie the genre. In order to better perceive and understand philosophies of the law, this thesis connects jurisprudence expounded by mainstream 20th century legal thinkers with the lives and music of rock stars of the 1960s and beyond. With their propensity for unconventional, anti-establishment, and sometimes lawless behaviour, rock stars may initially appear incompatible with legal thinking and its concerns, such as justice, rules and rulers, and considered decision making.
