This text presents a reflection on the roles that conservator-restorers may play within the context of the disaster risk reduction efforts that Europe currently dedicates to Cultural Heritage assets. Besides discussing some aspects related to the contribution of the discipline proper to the disaster risk management of these assets, arguments are made for an increased engagement of the Conservation-Restoration private sector in research and development actions aimed at more integrated decision-making processes in the conservation of cultural property. Roman mortars from the industrial archaeological site of Tróia (Portugal) have been studied by means of chemical, mineralogical and microstructural analysis. The mortars are calcitic aerial lime mortars differing in the type and proportion of aggregates used, including crushed carbonaceous rocks (limestone and dolomite), siliceous sand and crushed ceramics. The results show that although these mortars have been subjected to a very aggressive environment they are still in a very good state of conservation.

These are exciting times for the study of Roman literature. New editions of the fragmentary poets and prose writers either have appeared or are in preparation, while renewed interest in the nature and character of the early Roman audience, and in the development of Roman literature itself, has sought to explain the larger context in which these writings arose and were read. Monographs and commentaries on early writers and genres have appeared in profusion, with four volumes on Ennius'Annalsalone published within two years, at least one of which has raised serious questions of what we can and c

In this paper we analyse the way water has shaped the landscape around Alcácer do Sal, the ancient Roman city of Salacia. The Sado river presents itself as an integrating element in a productive landscape based on the salt exploitation and the production of amphorae, to supply the powerful "industry" of fish salting that developed in the river mouth, in Caetobriga (Setúbal) and Tróia. Starting from the reading of the dynamic landscape of the Sado valley, we focus our analysis on the Roman pottery workshops located in the surroundings of Alcácer - Barrosinha, Bugio, Vale de Cepa and Enchurrasqu

AbstractOne of the more unusual attractions in Windsor Great Park is the folly beside the lake at Virginia Water. Built in the 1820's in the form of an idealised Classical ruin, it incorporates a large collection of Roman antiquities from the site of Lepcis Magna in Libya. Considering the importance of this monument, not only as one of the most elaborate follies, but one of largest assemblages of Roman architectural fragments in the country, it has received relatively little scholarly attention. The remains of Vindonissa, the Roman legionary camp in Switzerland, have been the subject of extensive archaeological studies. Knowledge of the building time plays a role in reconstructions of the history of this site. We radiocarbon dated mortar samples selected from one of the Roman monuments (Westtor) as well as a nearby Medieval monastery. 14C ages obtained on the first fraction and second fraction of very short dissolution appear close to the expected Roman age of ∼2000 BP, while the monastery is dated to historic times, after AD 1308.

So the viewer’s attention is attracted by the ideological message of ruins, which is always different from the set of meanings of the complete edifice, and often contradicts it. This is clearly seen in the case of sacred buildings. In the 16th and 17th centuries Roman Catholic writers claimed, that the ruins of pagan temples in Rome are monuments of the ancient Roman Empire’s power, but their current state clearly shows the defeat of paganism and triumph of Christianity. Temple-church conversion was a deeply meaningful process that took many different forms throughout the Eastern Mediterranean. It was not simple triumphalism, nor was it motivated purely by expedience. No such single, overarching explanations are found. Instead, many factors influenced the process, with factors local to specific sites key to understanding why conversion took place and why different forms were taken. This variety led, both intentionally and not, to a vast array of created, appropriated and adapted user experiences. Unlike many previous studies, I believe one can only understand

This dissertation is a comprehensive and analytical study of drawings and prints produced by artists and architects between the fifteenth and early seventeenth centuries showing Roman ruins. The unprecedented interest in classical antiquity that emerged in the fifteenth century, which came to define the artistic, architectural, and cultural evolution of the Renaissance, was the catalyst for the production of such ruin-based images, of which thousands of examples survive. Because these drawings and prints were all inspired by and depict Roman ruins, they have often been treated as a single, coh
