Abstract:
Combined defects in the functioning of T- lymphocytes and B-lymphocytes are predominantly disorders of childhood and are encompassed by the term ‘severe combined immunodeficiency’ (SCID). SCID comprises a heterogeneous group of inherited disorders characterized by fundamental defects in T-cell development, accompanied by severe impairment of B-cell function. Although SCID is largely a paediatric problem, prompt diagnosis followed by early haemopoietic stem cell transplantation has resulted in many adult survivors who are followed up by clinical immunologists.
