Finck, Susan A. "Gender, management style, and decision-making of human resource managers in heath promotion and wellness programming." Virtual Press, 1996. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1048381.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigated the relationship between gender, management style, and decision-making regarding wellness programming by human resource managers. From a sample of 200 members of the Society for Human Resource Management from the state of Indiana, 83 individuals participated in this study. Each participant completed the 10-item Sargent and Miller Leadership Questionnaire, and ranked, in order of importance, five possible benefit offerings (of which wellness programs was one) that their organization could offer its' employees. T-test analysis revealed that gender was not an indicator of management style preference, nor was it an indicator of the perceived importance of wellness/health promotion programs. Although gender did not show any relevance to management style or the support of wellness programs, the use of correlational analysis did reveal a slight correlation between management style and the support for wellness programs.

Yadav, Ruby, Oluyemi Rotimi, Hima Bindu Dubasi, and Mildred Maisonet. "Preferences in Timing of Sex Education Instruction among Tennessee Sex Education Providers and ETSU College Students." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2018. https://dc.etsu.edu/asrf/2018/schedule/57.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction In 2015, compared to the national rates, Tennessee had the 9th highest teen birth rate, 15th highest rate of reported cases of chlamydia, and 14th highest rate of reported cases of gonorrhea. Sex education that includes instruction on contraception along with abstinence has been found to delay sexual initiation, decrease number of sexual partners, and increase condom or contraceptive use. These behavioral choices by young people can help reduce teen pregnancies and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). Introduction of contraception topics in earlier grades can equip young people with necessary tools to prevent unwanted pregnancies and STIs before they become sexually active. We explored the grades in which sex education providers taught topics such as birth control, condoms, and abstinence and the lowest grade at which they prefer to teach these topics. We then compared providers’ responses with responses from ETSU college students who had their sex education in TN. Methods To obtain information from sex education providers in TN public schools, we sent a recruitment email or letter with a weblink to a web-based survey from April to June 2017, to 3,249 potential providers. Of all potential providers, 509 completed the survey, yielding a response rate of 15.7%. Of those who completed the survey, final analysis included 137 providers who taught sex education in the 2015-2016 school year to any of grades 5 through 12 students. To get information from recipients of sex education in TN schools, a convenience sample of ETSU college students were asked to complete a survey using the ETSU SONA system in Fall 2017 semester. Of 385 students who completed the survey, final analysis included 216 (56.1%) students who were between ages 18-24 and attended the grade in which they had most of their sex education in TN. Provider and student surveys had similar items on grades in which sex education topics were taught and the lowest grade in which they would want these topics to be covered. Survey responses were analyzed using descriptive tests. Results Most providers (83.9%) taught abstinence by grade 12, and 37.2% had taught it by middle school (i.e. at or before 8th grade). Similarly, many students mentioned that abstinence was taught by 12th grade (92.1%) and by 8th grade (62.5%). Whereas, fewer providers taught topics, such as, birth control (65.0%), how to use condoms (22.6%), how to use and where to get birth control (31.4%), and much fewer providers taught these topics by middle school (17.5%, 8.0%, 8.8%, respectively). Most students expressed that these topics be taught by 12th grade (97.7%, 97.2%, 96.3%, respectively), and over two-thirds preferred that these topics be taught by middle school (71.8%, 67.6%, 63.9%, respectively). Also, about half of providers expressed that these topics be taught by middle school (68.6%, 46.7%, 51.8%, respectively). Conclusion This study finds that students want contraception topics to be taught in earlier grades, and that providers also prefer to teach these topics earlier. Future research should focus on factors that can enable providers to teach these topics in earlier grades.

Tobin, Donna. "Socially and Emotionally Competent Leadership: Promoting Staff Resilience and Well-being Through SEL Opportunities." Thesis, Boston College, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/bc-ir:108824.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Raquel Muniz
There is an abundance of research that both supports teachers’ developing the social and emotional competencies (SEC) of students and acknowledges that doing so positively impacts students’ academic and life success, as well as improving general well-being. As of 2020, Massachusetts required teachers to provide social emotional learning (SEL) opportunities for students, but district and school leaders have done little to develop teachers' own SEC. Yet, the literature shows that teachers’ SEC matter, both to the successful implementation of SEL programs in classrooms and to teachers’ own ability to manage their emotions and handle stress. Teaching is stressful and high emotional stress can lower resilience and impact job performance. This qualitative case study examined the practices of school-based leaders in one Massachusetts public school district to determine which leadership practices developed and supported the resilience and well-being of school-based staff and how those practices promoted SEL opportunities for staff. Data was gathered from leaders and school-based staff through semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, and document review. Findings revealed that leaders developed and supported staff resilience and well-being when they provided opportunities for collaboration, recognized and provided feedback to staff, included staff in decisions related to their work, and supported work-life balance and self-care. Engaging in these leadership practices allowed leaders to promote SEL opportunities for staff and often modeled SEC for staff

Roberts, Creta M. "Promoting generalization of coin value relations with young children via equivalence class formation." Virtual Press, 1999. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1137578.

Full text
Abstract:
Sidman and Tailby (1982) established procedures to analyze the nature of stimulus to stimulus relations established by conditional discriminations. Their research describes specific behavioral tests to determine the establishment of properties that define the relations of equivalence. An equivalence relation requires the demonstration of three conditional relations: reflexivity, symmetry, and transitivity. The equivalence stimulus paradigm provides a method to account for novel responding. The research suggests that equivalence relations provide a more efficient and effective approach to the assessment, analysis, and instruction of skills. The present research examined the effectiveness of the formation of an equivalence class in teaching young children coin value relations. The second aspect of the study was to determine if there was a relationship between equivalence class formation and generalization of the skills established to other settings. Five children, 4- and 5-years old, were selected to participate in the study based on their lack of skills in the area of coin values and purchasing an item with dimes or quarters equaling fifth cents. The experimental task was presented on a Macintosh computer with HyperCard programming. The experimental stimuli consisted of pictures of dimes, quarters, and Hershey candy bars presented in match-to-sample procedures. Two conditional discriminations were taught (if A then B and if B then C.). The formation of an equivalence class was evaluated by if C then A. Generalization across settings was tested after the formation of an equivalence class by having the children purchase a Hershey candy bar with dimes at a play store. A multiple baseline experimentaldesign was used to demonstrate a functional relationship between the formation of an equivalence class and generalization of skills across settings. The present research provides supportive evidence that coin value relations can be taught to young children using equivalence procedures. The study also demonstrated generalization of novel, untaught stimuli across settings, after the formation of an equivalence class. A posttest on generalization across settings was conducted 3 months after the study. Long-term stability of equivalence relations was demonstrated by three of the subjects.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper analyses the difference probability in holding managerial positions between men and women in Japan as the glass ceiling effect. In addition, we analyses whether the difference is affected by gender composition within the workplaces. We estimate two specifications of an ordered logit model on Japanese General Social Surveys (JGSS) as well as Japanese yearbook of labor statistics in the year 2010. The results indicate that there is different probability of holding managerial status that women have lower probability of holding managerial positions irrespective of management level comparing to men. However, we can observe that the differentials are decreasing as the managerial positions move up into higher managerial hierarchies. This finding indicates that women have higher chance to hold higher positions. Thus, it is contradict to our hypothesis. In addition, the result suggests that the gender composition also matter in probability of holding managerial status between male and female in Japan. We inspect that the difference probability in holding managerial status between genders is greater in female dominated occupation. This finding shows the effect of glass ceiling that occurs when women work in female dominated occupation as it follows the theory.

Chen, Qian. "An investigation of the role of food tourism in promoting Chinese regions." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/4872.

Full text
Abstract:
Food tourism is an activity that can be promoted by destination marketers. The aims of this research are to provide a holistic examination of domestic tourists’ food experience in China, and to evaluate the potential of food tourism in promoting Chinese regions from the demand side. It has four specific research objectives, including (1) examining the food experience of domestic tourists at three different travel stages in China, (2) assessing the relationships between the food experience of tourists and their demographic profiles, (3) developing a structural model addressing the potential relationships between tourists’ food experience and loyalty intentions toward Chinese destinations, and (4) providing recommendations for marketers to achieve successful destination promotion through food tourism. In order to achieve the research aims and objectives, with the development of a structural theoretical model, a quantitative research design was employed in the study. Data was specifically collected from a sample of 1702 domestic tourists at ten representative destinations in Mainland China. The findings of this study revealed that: firstly, food is, overall, of great significance to Chinese domestic tourists; however, it plays a varying role in domestic tourists’ experiences at different travel stages in China. Secondly, demographic factors such as gender and age have influences on the food experience of Chinese domestic tourists, while educational level has been revealed to be of little influence. Thirdly, tourists’ food satisfaction and food-related behavioural intentions were in direct and positive correlation to tourists’ destination loyalty intentions. The findings highlighted the contribution of local food at a destination level in the context of China, and signified the great potential for destinations to utilise food tourism to attract and retain tourists. Moreover, given the interrelationships shown between the underlying factors of tourists’ food experience and tourists’ destination loyalty intentions, it is noted that tourists’ food experience is a complex multi-phase model among which different phases interrelate with each other exerting an influence on tourists’ loyalty intentions to specific destinations in China. Lastly, based on these findings, both theoretical and practical implications were derived. In particular, practical recommendations have been provided to marketers on how to effectively utilise food tourism to achieve successful destination promotion in China.

Baker, Colin. "Partnership working for the promotion of sport and physical activity : an investigation into Community Sports Networks in England." Thesis, University of Gloucestershire, 2011. http://eprints.glos.ac.uk/5588/.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Low participation in sport and physical activity pose a continuing public health challenge. In response, partnership approaches have commonly been employed in community public health interventions. However, evidence concerning sport and physical activity partnerships remains underdeveloped. Aim and methods: The aim of the research was to investigate the attitudes, perceptions, and experiences of community stakeholders participating in Community Sports Networks (CSNs) in England. A mixed methods research design was adopted. The quantitative component consisted of a sample of 171 CSN members from across England. The qualitative component consisted of a sample of 23 key informants from a single county in the South West of England. A synthesised grounded theory approach was used to integrate data. This involved: 1. Analysis of survey responses. 2. Analysis of interview transcripts. 3. Analysis of additional data including notes from CSN meetings and secondary documents. In addition, inferential statistical analyses were conducted on the quantitative data to assess the contributions from sets of predictor variables on the value of binary outcome variables. The results showed: 1. Participation in CSNs could be explained by a conceptual model which located 'searching for value' as the core category. Four sub-categories of notionally endorsing, speculating, scrutinising, and embedding helped to explain the participation process. 2. Perceived costs (OR = 0.89, 95% Cl 0.82 to 0.94, P < 0.05) were more important than perceived benefits (OR = 1.05, 95% Cl 0.98 to 1.14, P > 0.05) for predicting sense of satisfaction. Perceived costs (OR= 0.83, 95% Cl 0.74 to 0.94, P < 0.05) and communication (OR= 0.83, 95% Cl 0.67 to 0.81, P < 0.05) were strong predictors of sense of ownership. 3. Perceived benefits may have to be at least twice the level of perceived costs for a favourable cost-benefit ratio. Conclusions: Factors facilitating the creation of value promote stakeholder participation in CSN activities. However, the participation process is subject to a range of challenges which require constant attention.

Abstract:
Examensarbete i folkhälsovetenskap10 poäng.

Malmö University: School of Health and Society, Department of Biomedical Laboratory Science, Public health and Nursing, 2007.Last year’s research bring out school’s importance as an arena for prevention efforts. Still, few schools systematically work with applying effective programs for young people’s social, emotional and academic learning. The purpose of my study was to examine in which ways school can prevent ill-health and promote health in pupils by applying different methods. Moreover, this qualitative study has consisted of interviews, and was carried out in two schools in Malmö. School A applied SET –social emotional training, and school B worked on the basis of the health promoting school concept. Both schools strived for promoting students’ skills development in things like decision making and social interaction, as well as to promote their health. In this work a supportive educationalist’s perspective was considered important. Thus, different activities for skills development in both schools probably increase the autonomy and the possibility to achieve increased control. This likely also reduces the risk for risk behavior development, hence, prevents ill-health. Involvement, as well as a supportive educationalist’s perspective, can promote health in students. Efforts concerning things like the social atmosphere and the everyday structure can increase the quality of life, and promote student´s success in school. This in turn can also promote student’s future health. However, some factors can possibly limit the good effects shown from the application of the methods. For instance referring to limitations in the implementation process and restrictions in students’ autonomy and involvement due to the educationalist’s ”top down” perspective.

Stickley, Theodore. "Promoting mental health through an inner city community arts programme : a narrative inquiry." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2008. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/10542/.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus of this study is a community arts programme, Art in Mind, which is based in an inner-city area of an East Midlands city in the UK and was funded by the government's New Deal for the Communities. The aim of the qualitative research study was to gain understanding of the human processes involved in setting up such a project and to ascertain the subsequent benefits to participants. The research was conducted in two stages: stage one involved semi-structured interviews with seven of the original Art in Mind Steering Group members and stage two comprised interviews with eleven participants who were interviewed up to three times over a one-year period. Sixteen people were interviewed in total. The findings from participants are presented as a case-series. Interviewees included those who subsequently became members of the 'Lost Artists Club', one of the community-based activities that originated within the project and those who engaged with an 'Arts on Prescription' programme. In both stages, a total of 35 qualitative interviews were conducted. The concept of mental health promotion through the arts is examined in the context of national developments to promote social inclusion. The methodological framework for the research is a narrative inquiry and emphasis is given to the stories that are individually and collectively constructed and recounted by the participants. All the data were subject to a narrative analysis, incorporating thematic, event and relational analysis. Individual and collective narratives are presented. Findings from stage one of the research identify the personal motivations of Steering Group members to develop the programme. Findings from stage two of the research reveal that the project facilitated new personal, social and occupational opportunities for participants. Identity claims are strong, as people have re-constructed themselves as artists. Participants enjoy a sense of belonging and social identity with like-minded people.

Chalamandaris, Alexandros-Georgios. "EVIDENCE-BASED HEALTH PROMOTION: EXPLORING THE EVOLUTION OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SCHOOL-BASED ANTI-BULLYING INTERVENTIONS OVER TIME." Doctoral thesis, Universite Libre de Bruxelles, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2013/ULB-DIPOT:oai:dipot.ulb.ac.be:2013/269925.

Full text
Abstract:
The objectives of this thesis were to explore how effectiveness of school-based anti-bullying interventions (SBABI) evolves over time and to assess the possibility to predict the medium-term or long-term effectiveness of SBABIs on the basis of their short-term effectiveness. The first step included a literature review in order to understand the study designs and evaluation techniques that researches used to assess the effectiveness. This literature review described the methodologies based on which researchers collected evidence and concluded on the effectiveness of their SBABIs. In order to address the thesis objectives, a collaborative project was established, named SET-Bullying (“Statistical modelling of the Effectiveness of school based anti-bullying interventions and Time”). The above-mentioned literature review was used to identify potentially eligible studies. After addressing a call for collaboration to the corresponding authors of these studies, this project included data from two of them, the DFE-SHEFFIELD study from United Kingdom and the RESPEKT study from Norway. Both of these studies have used pupil self-reported frequencies on being bullied and bullying others as an effectiveness measure, but using different instruments to elicit this information. Thus, the subsequent step of this thesis was to harmonize the data from these studies using polychoric principal components analysis, in order to be able to perform the same analysis with the data from both studies. The data from both studies were analysed using mixed effect models in order to take into account the hierarchical (i.e. the responses of pupils from the same school may be more correlated with each other as opposed to the responses of pupils from different schools) and the longitudinal structure (i.e. same pupils are more likely to respond in a similar way in the repeated measurements of each studies) of the data. With regard to the primary objective of the thesis, it was observed that effectiveness (where it is observed) may evolve either in a linear fashion or a “delayed effect” may be observed. This refers to a minimal evolution of effectiveness over the first study measurements and a sharper evolution at the later study measurements. This finding is only hypothesis generating at this point. Would this be confirmed in future studies, it will have important implication of the design, implementation and evaluations of SBABIs. About the secondary objective of this thesis, there were some preliminary findings of the possibility to predict the medium-term or long-term effectiveness based on the short-term effectiveness. However, these predictions in some cases seemed to be very variable. Future research should focus on how to make these predictions more accurate in order that this allows for dynamic and adaptable delivery of SBABIs.

Wernersbach, Brenna M. "Healthy Sexuality: Evaluating a Psychoeducational Group Promoting Knowledge, Communication, and Positive Experiences." DigitalCommons@USU, 2013. http://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/1525.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study examined the state of healthy sexuality among college students and the influence of a psychoeducational group on related constructs. Healthy sexuality is comprised of multiple constructs, including accurate knowledge, positive attitudes, risk reducing behaviors, open communication among partners, and self-efficacy for creating desired experiences and preventing unwanted experiences. Sexuality-related knowledge, attitudes and values, and behaviors were measured prior to and following the four-session intervention. Additionally, prior sexuality education at the familial and school-based levels was assessed and compared to the designed intervention. Fifty-six young adults participated in the groups, with topics covering sexual anatomy and response, communication, safer sex practices, and preventing unwanted experiences. Assessment prior to the designed intervention exemplified the wide variety of educational experiences and sources that young adults have, contributing to great variation in sexual knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, and self-efficacy. Participants reported varying levels of satisfaction with their sexuality education prior to the intervention, but satisfaction was unrelated to knowledge accuracy. Attitudes, values, and behaviors were similar to national samples. Assessment following the intervention demonstrated significant improvement in many of these areas, indicating that college students are likely to benefit from continued sexuality education. The level of interest for participation in the study indicates young people's interest in increasing healthy sexuality in their lives. It is hoped that the designed intervention may continue to be made available to young adults and tailored to meet their needs and desires as appropriate.

Eze, Nicholas Chinedu. "Rethinking maritime delimitation and promoting joint development of petroleum: the Nigeria-Sao-Tome and Principe joint development model." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/37104.

Full text
Abstract:
In an era when maritime delimitation disputes abound because of the perceived and actual presence of valuable natural resources in the disputed boundaries, this thesis seeks to examine a particular alternative way of resolving maritime disputes called joint development. A good number of states are, expectedly, unable to resolve their maritime disputes say by a successful bilateral mutual agreement where natural resources capable of changing their economic fate are found to straddle such disputed area(s). Maritime disputes already abound with potential ones breeding. Resorting to third party dispute resolution is certainly better than aggression and intimidation, but may either be counterproductive or unpredictable with the state of international judicial precedents on the matter. Indeed, even after a bona fide judicial settlement, there is no guarantee of peace and security in such troubled waters. This is traceable to the winner-takes-all nature of a third party settlement of disputes- be it arbitration or adjudication. It is in recognition of this situation that this thesis seeks to promote joint development in the absence of a mutual delimitation and deemphasizes third party dispute resolution and outright delimitation for such situations. The thesis focuses on the nature and merits of joint development of straddling resources over outright judicial or arbitral delimitation with practical and existing scenarios. The presence of existing joint developments around the world and in particular the Nigeria-Sao-Tome Principe Joint Development effort, as a model of joint development, is elucidated in this work and the features that have made it work. This thesis is concluded by a discourse of what the writer considers to be the gains of joint development which third party dispute resolution and outright delimitation do not offer in straddling or disputed resources development and management.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the study is to examine the effectiveness of the social cognition training on the peer acceptance (as playmates and working partners) of SEN students in the inclusive classrooms. 4 classes of Form 1 students were randomly assigned to either control groups (n=65) or experimental groups (n=58). The social cognition training on perspective-taking skills and empathy can help to initiate working relationship but failed to enhance the social interaction of the students in play. The results did not demonstrate any changes obtained on other measures of perceptions or behaviors. On the other hand, the study results revealed that there were no significant differences on peer acceptance between SEN and non SEN students in the pre-intervention and post-intervention stages. These findings were consistent with the previous studies when the non SEN students in these studies could not identify who are their SEN classmates, which may suggest that they could not hold stereotypical views on their SEN counterparts. Results also showed that empathy mediated the effects of perspective-taking ability on peer acceptance on play-with criterion. The implication of understanding on the peer acceptance of SEN students in an inclusive classroom and suggestions for appropriate intervention were discussed.

Abstract: Dry reforming of methane (DR) is attracting increasingly the attention, because it is an important process from an environmental point of view as it requires CH4 and CO2 gases responsible for the greenhouse effect, in addition to producing synthesis gas which in turn It is used for producing value-added chemical products such as synthetic fuels, methanol and high-purity hydrogen. In this sense, the biogas is presented as a promising source because if partially treated, can be raw material for dry reforming process for the production of synthesis gas. The Ni supported on ?-Al2O3 catalysts is one of the most used in the CH4, but the coke accumulation over the solid surface is the main obstacle. In this regard, basic promoters have been studied in order to modify the acid-base properties, minimizing carbon deposition ver the catalyst. Were prepared Ni/Al2O3 catalysts containing different loads of Mg by the wet impregnation method and characterized by X-ray fluorescence, N2 physisorption, XRD, RPT, DTP-NH3, H2 chemisorption, SEM and EDS techniques. For conducting the catalytic reaction test, was used a continuous tubular reactor, being studied the reaction variables: reaction temperature (650, 700 and 750 ºC), space velocity (VHSV from 7.5; 15 and 30 L.h-1.gcat-1) and Mg loadings (3, 5 e 10% w.w.). The catalytic stability was analyzed with reaction time of 20 hours. In the reactions of RS the Ni/5Mg-Al2O3 catalyst led to higher CH4 and CO2 convertion, H2 molar fraction and showed the lower coke formation compared to the others. In general the best conversions and molar fraction were observed in reactions conducted at higher temperatures and lower space velocities. The results of the reaction conducted for 20 hours reaction indicated that there was no significant loss of catalytic activity during the reaction. Abstract:
Individuals infected with HIV through heterosexual contact made up 24% (9,578) of all new infections in the United States. Female sex workers are at increased risk of getting HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STI) because they may be more likely to participate in risky sexual behaviors including sex with multiple partners and condom-less anal/vaginal sex. Guided by the syndemic theory, the purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between social and structural factors (homelessness, substance use, immigration status, and use of healthcare) and risky sexual behaviors (condom-less vaginal sex and multiple sex partners) among female sex workers while controlling for age and sexual violence. This study was conducted using a quantitative research approach with a correlational method. Multiple linear regression statistical testing was performed using data from 534 participants from the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance study. Immigration status was not significantly associated with condom-less vaginal sex or multiple sex partners. However, homelessness and substance use were positively associated with condom-less vaginal sex and multiple sex partners. In addition, utilization of healthcare was negatively associated with condom-less vaginal sex. The results from this study can increase awareness and knowledge of challenges and barriers among female sex workers living in Illinois. In addition, the results of this study may contribute to establishing baseline epidemiology of this population and guidelines on addressing the factors associated with unsafe sexual behaviors that can potentially lead to HIV and other STIs.

As medidas e as previsões numéricas mostram boa concordância estabelecendo assim a validade do modelo proposto
Abstract: The heat storage in the form of latent heat represents an alternative of great potential in intermittent systems and conservation. One of the geometries less explored in literature and in the field of application is to use a cylindrical geometry with radial fins fixed along the tube. The fins in this case represent devices to increase the rate of heat transfer and thus the solidification of the PCM. In order to further increase the rate of solidification of PCM, the insertion of a promoter of turbulence along the tube, causing further unrest and turmoil, which in turn increases the coefficient of heat exchange and thus the rate of solidification of PCM . So this study aims to investigate the influences of geometric and operational parameters on the interface speed, time to complete solidification and the total mass solidified and therefore the total energy stored. In the experimental investigation were tested with several fins tubes ranging from 40 to 180 mm, number of secondary fluid flow rates and various operating temperatures with and without turbulence promoter and with or without flaps with the main objective to quantify the effect of fins and promoter turbulence on the solidification rate or interface speed, time to complete solidification and total mass solidified. A numerical program was adapted to simulate the process of solidification around horizontal tube with radial vanes. The experimental measurements are used to validate the model and confirm the possibility of its use in forecasting performance of such an arrangement of tubes. Measurements and numerical predictions show good agreement thus establishing the validity of the proposed model

Abstract:
One in every 4 people living with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) are women. The leading cause of infection is heterosexual contact. The purpose of this quantitative, correlational study was to examine the relationship between gender ratio perception and masculine ideology and a woman's decision to use condoms during her sexual activity. The theory of gender and power and the theory of planned behavior served as the theoretical frameworks for this study. The perceptions of gender ratios, as measured by the Gender Ratio Imbalance Beliefs and Behaviors Scale (GRIBBS) subscale, GRIBeliefs, and masculine ideologies, as measured by the Gender Role Beliefs Scale (GRBS), served as independent variables, while condom use behaviors, as measured by the Gender Ratio Imbalance Beliefs and Behaviors Scale (GRIBBS) subscale, GRIBehaviors, served as the dependent variable. Covariates included demographic factors, as well as behavioral factors. A purposeful, convenience sample (n=55) via the Walden University research pool was utilized, enabling researchers to use readily available data that represented college educated women. Descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, correlational analysis, as well as multiple linear regression were used to examine the aforementioned perceptions of study participants. Correlation analyses and multiple regression indicated no statistically significant correlations between gender ratio imbalance, masculine ideology, and condom use, while controlling for race, employment status, religion, religious devoutness, sexual orientation, relationship status, STD history (self), and partner STD history. Social change is indicated via the results illustrating the possible empowerment of women regarding their sexual health.

Abstract:
Novel environments and biological communities created by the large-scale deployment of Marine Renewable Energy Devices (MREDs) have the potential to promote the spread of non-native species (NNS). Knowledge of how community composition resident on MREDs is shaped by geography, local hydrodynamics and the duration of deployment, will clarify how these technologies will interact with natural habitats, including the provision of suitable habitat for NNS. A network of navigation buoys was used to study biofouling communities in areas proposed for MRED deployment. Significant differences in community structure were observed in different geographic areas. A significant reduction in number of taxa present and community wet-weight was observed where buoys were deployed in greater tidal flow rates. However, overall community composition was not significantly different between ‘high’ (>1 ms-1) and ‘low’ (<1 ms-1) flow areas and for buoys deployed for different time durations (1-7 years). These finding have important implications for the longevity of devices and their interaction with natural habitats, including proposed ‘artificial reef’ effects. In total five non-native species were identified on the buoys sampled, supporting the need to monitor MREDs as the industry grows. Hydrodynamic and biotic features of the epibenthic communities were used to predict the presence of the most prevalent NNS, the amphipod Caprella mutica, in addition to other native amphipod species. Caprella mutica presence was found to be significantly affected by increasing flow speed compared with the native amphipod Jassa herdmani. Behavioural flume studies investigating flow-related processes governing the presence of non-native amphipods supported these findings. This study details how the hydrodynamic and biological environments created by MREDs determine their suitability for the establishment of self-sustaining populations, and therefore their dispersal potential for NNS. These findings inform design criteria and management options to minimise the biosecurity risk that these structures will pose as the industry expands.

Abstract:
In 2015, TN had the 9th highest teen birth rate in the United States. School-based sex education programs have shown promise in curbing teen pregnancy rates. In TN public schools, sex education could be taught by teachers of subjects like biology, health education, or invited guests from ministries, or national or local nonprofit agencies. The content, rigor, and approach of sex education taught by these diverse groups of providers remains unknown. This pilot study tested a survey questionnaire and methodology, while providing information on the providers’ sex education practices and perspectives. We adapted validated measures from past sex education surveys to reflect the context of TN. The survey items were reviewed and refined by diverse groups of experts on school-based health education, teen pregnancy prevention programs, and adolescent health. The survey was created and distributed via a web-based tool. A recruitment email or letter with a weblink to the survey was sent to 3,249 potential sex education providers, from April to June 2017. Of all contacts, 509 completed the survey, yielding a response rate of 15.7%. Of those who completed the survey, 137 taught sex education in the 2015-2016 school year to any of grades 5 through 12 students. Survey responses were analyzed using descriptive tests. Abstinence (83.9%) was taught by most respondents, by grade 12, but far less respondents taught topics related to birth control (65.0%) and condoms: how to use condoms (22.6%), how to use and where to get other birth control (31.4%). Providers with more years of experience, and those who expressed that they had received enough training, were more likely to teach more number of topics, including controversial topics, such as condoms and birth control. Most providers indicated that sex education topics should be taught in earlier grades. This study identified the job titles of providers, content being taught, approach to teaching, and how providers would want to teach sex education. Identifying providers is crucial to designing sex education training programs, tracking program effectiveness, and changes in practices over time, to achieve the goal of curbing TN teen pregnancy rates through quality sex education.

Abstract:
Many schools have adopted social and emotional learning programs, but few schools have achieved significant impacts on student outcomes because of challenges with implementation quality. Although there is guidance on selecting evidence-based social and emotional learning programs for classroom use, schools need guidance on how best to integrate social and emotional learning in context. This study examines how an elementary school integrated school-wide social and emotional learning into its daily practices, using a qualitative single case study grounded in Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory. The study, which was conducted during an eight-week period, identifies promising practices that could be beneficial for implementing and improving social and emotional learning practices. Data collection includes multiple sources of data, such as observations, document analyses, semi-structured interviews, and focus groups. Drawing upon Stake’s (1995) process for data analysis, the following themes emerge: (1) routines and shared practices, (2) physical environment and classrooms, (3) common language (4) school family, and (5) leadership support for social and emotional learning. The implications of this study support understandings of what integrated school-wide social and emotional learning programming look like in an elementary school context. Keywords: school-wide, integrated, social and emotional learning, SEL, school micro-contexts, elementary school, implementation, school-wide SEL programming.

Saint-Pierre, Hilaire. "Socioeconomic Status as a Predictor of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease." ScholarWorks, 2016. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/3258.

Abstract:
While epidemiological research has generated new knowledge about the treatment and prevention of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) through smoking secession, the socioeconomic status (SES) of people with the disease has been under investigated. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine the predictability of association between SES and COPD. This study was based on the ecological theory, which states that health and disease may have multiple underlying factors. This study was a secondary analysis of archived data from the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). The dataset was collected for the National Survey of Midlife Development in the United States (MIDUS)" study. Variables were measured at the nominal, ordinal, and continuous levels. In this cross-sectional quantitative analysis, logistic regression was used to inform the research questions. The results showed that neither education, income, nor occupation was a predictor of COPD. The logistic regression reported the significance of the predictability of education, income, and occupation to be Ï? = 1.000, Ï? = .498, Ï? = .581, respectively, with odd ratios and confidence interval of 1.007 (.987, 1.028), 1.018 (.948, 1.094), 1.429 (.684, 2.988). Neither education, income, nor occupation yielded a significant statistic value for a Ï? Ë? .05 or a p Ë? .01. These non-significant results regarding the relationship between the SES of a person and COPD reaffirmed that cigarette smoking remains the known determinant of the disease. The social implications of these research findings are that more stringent laws and mandates need to be enacted to discourage easy access to the proven determining factor of COPD: cigarettes smoking.

Stanavitch, Vicki A. "Symptom Presentation Frequency and Severity Associated with Adult Lyme Disease by ROSS Scale Review." ScholarWorks, 2016. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/2766.

Full text
Abstract:
Although Lyme disease is the most frequently reported vector-borne illness in the United States, recent evidence from the CDC suggests that Lyme disease incidence in the United States may be much higher than reported. Lyme disease symptoms can be mistaken for a wide variety of diseases, which can complicate the diagnosis. To date, no diagnostic criteria analysis has been conducted examining the association between sociodemographic variables (sex and age) and seasonality of infection with the severity and symptomology found in Lyme disease cases. Using the CDC's outbreak investigation model, a primary case/control study was conducted using the ROSS Scale to collect data. Comparisons were made between a Lyme disease-diagnosed group (n = 203) and a convenience sample of non-Lyme disease patients (n = 388). Novel symptom patterns were found to significantly predict a diagnosis of Lyme disease. Odds ratio results revealed a positive association between musculoskeletal (OR = 11; 95% CI), neurological (OR = 12; 95% CI), cognitive (OR = 10; 95% CI), and cutaneous (OR = 144; 95% CI) symptoms frequency and severity and the diagnosis of Lyme disease. In addition, overall symptom frequency and severity scores displayed significant differences between cases and controls, between males and females, and among certain age groups. No correlation was found between symptom frequency and severity with the seasonality of infection. Current diagnostic tools search for antibodies to the Borrelia bacteria, but antibody production takes a few weeks. The results of this study help identify at-risk patients based on the presentation and severity of Lyme disease symptoms when antibodies are not present in measureable quantities in the blood stream, allowing for earlier diagnosis.

Pineda, Karina. "An Exploration of Social Determinants of Health Constructs as Potential Mediators between Disability and Condom Usage." Scholar Commons, 2017. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/7078.

Full text
Abstract:
There is limited knowledge on the sexual health behaviors of young adults with physical disabilities, as people with disabilities have traditionally been treated homogenously without acknowledgement of the potential differences between disability types. The objective of this study was twofold. The first goal was to take a novel approach by guidance of the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) framework to compare how young adults with physical disabilities compare against those without physical disabilities in: 1) vaginal sexual activity, 2) condom usage, and 3) the effect of SDOH factors as potential mediators in predicting unprotected vaginal sex. Relatedly, the second goal was to investigate whether there was a difference in condom usage based on disability type criteria, specifically examining membership into the following impairment groups: physical disability, chronic health conditions, vision impairments, hearing impairments, and stuttering/stammering problems. This study employed secondary data analysis based on data from the National Longitudinal Adolescent to Adult Health Survey (ADD Health) – Wave III, in-home interview, public-use dataset. The variables used for the SDOH proxies were job status, student status, housing type, level of education, mentor status, cohabitation status, and health insurance status. Additionally, other social and demographic factors were also accounted in the model: age, race/ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation. Results from bivariate regression suggest that only those young adults with visual impairments and those with stuttering/stammering issues are less likely to engage in sexual activity when compared to their healthy counterparts. Regarding condom usage among sexually active individuals, those with physical disabilities, chronic health conditions, and hearing impairments may be less likely to use protection than their counterparts. However, further investigation revealed that the associations between condom usage and those disability type groups are mediated by 1 of the 7 measures of SDOH (cohabitation status) and three demographic factors – gender, race, and age. Hence, it is not the disability type that reduces safe sex practices compliance, but rather that those disability groups are associated to social and demographic factors that are, in turn, linked to unsafe sex practices. Furthermore, it appears that irrespective of disability membership, gender, age, race, and cohabitation status are all associated with condom use compliance. Findings advocate for a supplementary investigation of the relative contributions of the particular social factors that mediate the effect between disability status and condom usage.

Abstract:
The teen pregnancy rate in Henry County, Tennessee has increased over the years. The purpose of this project was to develop an evidence-based family life education policy for possible adoption by the board of education to address the persistent high teen pregnancy rate for girls aged 15-17 in the county. This present study resulted in a revised policy that was based on a comprehensive policy termed Abstinence-Centered Plus Contraception. An 18-member collaborative, organizational, and community project team, made up of community leaders, nurses, counselors, teachers, and students, assisted in the development and adoption of the policy, practice guidelines, and the development of implementation and evaluation plans for the newly adopted policy. The theoretical framework was based on the social, cognitive, and behavior change theories. The program logic model served as a framework to monitor its progress. Existing peer-reviewed literature, including research studies, state and national teen pregnancy prevention projects and curriculum, and publicly available statistics, were gathered and reviewed by the project team as background to be used for developing and changing policy at the institutional level. Project monitoring involved tracking processes surrounding policy and practice guideline development and adoption, as well as implementation and evaluation plan development for the adopted policy and whether these processes progressed as the empirically-derived teen pregnancy prevention projects should when changing sex education policy at the organizational level. This project resulted in policy adoption and developing a policy implementation and evaluation plan to be disseminated within a county school system that could decrease teen pregnancy rates and demonstrate positive outcomes.

The large production of waste and waste from rural activity must be managed effectively, and cases of treatment by biodigestion are generated more effectively, through the generation of a source of additional income, biogas. Biogas is represented by the mixture rich in CH4 and CO2 and can be used directly by a high temperature or mechanical energy generation, but it is a mixture that can be used as a source of energy of greater value, as synthesis gas. H2 and CO) and in other compounds therefrom, or purified for the choice of hydrogen. In the reform processes it occurs in the presence of catalysts, at high temperatures (600-1200 ºC). For evaluation, many issues that seek more efficient and stable catalysts for these processes, a tertiary operating cities. This work aims to present the results of the study of the conversion of biogas to silica gas using a reforming of the heat measurement system using a high efficiency nickel catalyst supported on Al2O3. Several calcination temperatures of the Al2O3 support (350, 500, 650 and 800 ° C) were studied, as well as the addition of Mg as a promoter (5% by mass). The catalysts were characterized by N2 physiotherapy, X-ray diffraction, desorption at the programmed ammonia temperature and thermogravimetry. The testes were run at 700 ° C, with a spatial distribution of 30 L h-1 gct-1, 1:1 atmosphere and reagent (CH4:CO2). The physical-chemical and activity characteristics of the final Ni/Al2O3 catalysts were studied in the increase of the calcination temperatures generated by the surface areas and pore volume, as well as an increase in the acidity in the lower bands of calcination, and decrease in higher, the greater activity of H2 and CO catalysts.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Business Administration))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2017.
This literature-based case study investigated the influence of gender differences and cultural values on women’s promotion prospects in the public sector of three sub-Saharan countries, namely: the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria and Sudan and provided a framework designed to facilitate the implementation of women’s promotion prospects in the public sector. Worldwide, women employed in the public sector are stereotyped and discriminated against by being by-passed for high-level positions by men who consider themselves more capable employees. As such, women are overlooked for promotion and encounter the ‘glass ceiling’, which hampers their efforts at accomplishing their career goals. Equality in promotion will improve women’s living conditions and benefit society. While studies have been conducted on several women’s issues, none has focused on how gender differences and cultural values affect women’s promotion in sub-Saharan Africa. This gap needs to be addressed. The design of the study was qualitative as it provides insights into the phenomenon studied. The data collection method was desk research, owing to financial constraints that did not allow for travelling to collect primary data. The study found that gender discrimination exists in both society and the public sector workplaces in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria and Sudan as a consequence of multi-ethnicity, religion (Sharia law) and war in the Sudan, particularly. The effects of cultural values on promotion and employment in these countries are palpable. The process of how women are promoted to leadership in the public sector is, however, unclear. The study also revealed that in a country like Rwanda, where equal gender opportunities exist socio-economically, fast economic growth and enhanced societal living conditions have been realised. Women’s promotion and well-being is strongly related to the elimination of poverty and the enhancement of living conditions such as reduced child starvation and death. Equality and empowerment of women is now globally accepted as a core human right that needs to be sustained. In this direction, a comprehensive framework for the implementation of gender policies on women’s promotion prospects was developed.

Peens, Maritha. "An investigation into strategies which enable South African women to break through the glass ceiling." Thesis, Port Elizabeth Technikon, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/135.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this study was to identify the strategies (personal and organisational) that would enable South African women to break through the glass ceiling. A questionaire was designed based on the strategies found in a literature study on the topic and used to gather inputs from executive women in South Africa. A combination of snowball and self-selection sampling was used. The questionaire was sent to 138 potential respondents, mostly by means of electronic mail. Of the 47 completed questionairs returned, 44 could be used. These were processed and anaylsed using Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and the STATISTICA Version 6 software. In generaL, support was found for personal strategies pertaining to career management, networking (especially the relationship building activities), the reconciliation of home and work responsibilities with the emphasis on building a support system, education, business and organisational insught, skills development and increased input, but not for the assimilation of masculine attributes. Networking opportunities and education, training and development activities were regarded as the organisational strategies with the strongest impact on career progress. The literature was confirmed regarding top management support, an organisational culture conducive to women's advancement, mentorship programmes and a few career development initiatives. Although more than half of the respondents had been exposed to employment equity and affirmative action programmes, they were perceived to have only little to moderate impact on career progress. This was also the case with diversity management programmes. Flexible work arrangements, career adaptation schemes and childcare facilities and programmes were seen as having had little impact on the respondents' career advancement. Only a few of the organisational practices to support women balancing family and work responsibilities were utilised by the respondents' employers. Respondents perceived personal strategies as having greater value than organisational strategies in their progress to executive levels.
