Abstract:
Exploring the interplay between fashion and architecture, this article introduces architectural fashion analysis method, an original methodology for analysing fashion shows through an architectural lens. Focusing on the works of Prada and OMA/AMO, the study delves into the narrative power of space in fashion presentations, informed by theories from Roland Barthes and Adrian Forty, as well as the theoretical model of fashion spaces by McQuillan and Hansen. This approach highlights the underexplored but crucial role of architectural thinking in fashion critique. The article posits that employing

Relationships between fashion and theatricality open up spaces of fantasy in which new ways of being can be imagined. In drawing upon the ways in which theatre exists in a space that is both physically real and created through imagination, the theatrics of high fashion similarly create spaces that are both physically real and imagined. Though often read as a symptom of an unnecessarily excessive system, theatricality in fashion can alternatively signal a turn towards a more ethical fashion system. It was emphasized that multi-dimensional space allows using a physical concept of Aristotle for the analysis of the socio-cultural phenomenon of fashion, which is represented in physical space. The question is raised according to the failure of the definition “fashion” and the need for its consideration in a philosophical perspective. However, here, too, “scenography” does not just mean creating a visual background, a pretty décor or striking set design for the presentation space and the staging of fashion and brands. In the cont

Along with a spatial turn in human and social sciences, it is increasingly recognized by fashion researchers that spaces and places of fashion matter – but it is less discussed how a theoretical framework could be created to explore these. Thus, a Lefebvrian spatial analysis is considered here. The approach suggested recognizes that dress is fundamentally political, as is the space which it inhabits.
