Clear differences in affective tone emerged from this scoring procedure: mathematics and physics received the least positive evaluative descriptions, while television was described in most a

We study letter grading schemes, which are routinely employed for evaluating student performance. Typically, a numerical score obtained via one or more evaluations is converted into a letter grade (e.g., A+, B-, etc.) by associating a disjoint interval of numerical scores to each letter grade. We propose the first model for studying the (de)motivational effects of such grading on the students and, consequently, on their performance in future evaluations. We use the model to compare uniform letter grading schemes, in which the range of scores is divided into equal-length parts that are mapped t

Abstract:
The score aggregation problem is to find an aggregate scoring over all candidates given individual scores provided by different agents. This is a fundamental problem with a broad range of applications in social choice and many other areas. The simple and commonly used method is to sum up all scores of each candidate, which is called the sum-up method. In this paper, we give good algebraic and geometric explanations for score aggregation, and develop a spectral method for it. If we view the original scores as `noise data', our method can find an `optimal' aggregate scoring by minimizing the `no

Automated essay scoring (AES) is the task of automatically assigning scores (i.e., grades) to written texts. Although AES has been widely studied in the literature (e.g., informational and argumentative essays), specific types of texts still need more attention. Narrative essays are characterized by texts describing personal experiences and stories, either real or fictional. In this work, we describe a study on scoring student essays written in Portuguese under the aspect of Formal Register, which evaluates aspects related to the use of Brazilian Portuguese formal grammar and proficiency. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to validate the second version of the Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System (PI-RADSv2) scores in predicting positive in-bore MRI-guided targeted prostate biopsy results across different non-university related institutions. The study focuses on PI-RADS v2 scoring because during the study period, PI-RADS v2.1 had not been released. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective review of 147 patients who underwent multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) of the pelvis followed by in-bore MRI-guided targeted prostate biopsy from December 201

Providing feedback to students in a sustainable way represents a perennial challenge for secondary teachers of writing. Employing artificial intelligence (AI) tools to give students personalized and immediate feedback holds great promise. Project Topeka offered middle school teachers pre-curated teaching materials, foundational texts and videos, essay prompts, and a platform for students to submit and revise essay drafts with AI-generated scores and feedback. We analyze AI-generated writing scores of 3,233 7th- and 8th-grade students in school year 2021-22 and find that students’ growth over t

The Industry 4.0 Technicians in Advanced Manufacturing (Industry 4.0 Tech) program was designed to address the skills gap caused by advancements in intelligent sensor technology, robotics, and automation. The project centered on supporting students in completing industry certifications in manufacturing. In 2019-2020, 237 students passed certification exams. In 2020-2021, 236 students passed certification exams. An analysis of the pass rates for 183 students was conducted. Of the 183 students, 146 were men, and 37 were women. Abstract:
This paper analyzes gender bias in teaching in low-performing schools in Chile. To carry out the analyses, the authors used videotaped classes for fourth graders and coded 237 tapings. Results show a general (although not uniform) bias in teachers' actions that resulted in less attention to female students. Gender bias had an even greater effect in classrooms where the teachers had worse interactions with students. Results show that less effective teachers (according to the Classroom Assessment Scoring System, or CLASS) show a larger gender bias. Greater gender bias is also correlated with low

Twenty important management areas (wetlands of management concern) and reference wetlands compose the sentinel wetlands at Cuyahoga Valley National Park. These wetlands are monitored more intensively than other wetlands in the program. This is the second report in a two-part series, designed to summarize the results from intensive vegetation surveys completed at sentinel wetlands from 2008 to 2018. The first report (Bingham and Young 2023) characterized the conditions in each wetland and provided baseline reference information for other reports and site-specific projects. In this report, we ex

All teachers were filmed teaching for a full day, and the videos were coded using a well-known classroom observation tool, the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (or CLASS). Abstract:
The body condition (BC) score is recognized in the dairy industry as an essential tool for managing the energy reserves of the dairy cow, which is essential for sustaining optimal and efficient production over several lactations. The current use of BC scoring depends on the accuracy of subjective visual estimates, and this limits its kusefulness as a management aid in the dairy industry. A measuring tool that would frequently provide objective data on the cow's body reserves would be a major contribution to efficient dairy herd management.
