Concerns over freshwater scarcity for agriculture, ecosystems, and human consumption are driving the construction of infiltration trenches in many mountain protected areas. This study examines the effectiveness of infiltration trenches in a subalpine forested catchment in central Mexico, where public and private organizations have been constructing trenches for ~60 years. We rely on empirical data to develop rainfall-runoff models for two scenarios: a baseline (no trenches) and a trenched scenario. Film cooling is a technique whereby air from the compressor stage of a gas turbine engine is diverted for cooling purposes to parts, such as the turbine stage, that operate at very high temperatures. Cooling arrangements include impingement jets, finned, ribbed and turbulated channels, and rows of film cooling holes, all of which over the years have become progressively more complex. This costly, but necessary complexity is a result of the industry's push to run engines at increasingly higher turbine inlet temperatures. Abstract:
Recently, there has been a strong focus on film cooling holes embedded in trenches. In this study, film cooling predictions are used to understand the mechanisms of the jets that exit these trenched holes. The present work employs RSM (Reynolds stress transport models) for simulation of turbulent flows in film cooling and the simulation was run using FLUENT computer code. Comparisons are made with experimental data for the film effectiveness distributions. Results show that the film cooling jet exiting the trenched hole shows more two-dimensional flow than the typical cylindrical holes. The je

The purpose of this project was to complete a handbook with practical design procedures for submarine pipeline on-bottom stability. The remaining part of the handbook was primarily a description of the interaction between non-trenched pipelines and the seabed where the pipelines were free to move under environmental loading. The objective of this project was to determine the lateral soil resistance forces on a pipeline moving cyclically during hydro-dynamic loading. To meet the goal, full-scale pipe-soil interaction tests were conducted. The models presented in this report are based on the res

Abstract:
Corrosion metal-loss is one of the major damage mechanisms to transmission pipelines worldwide. Several methods have been developed for assessment of corrosion defects, such as ASME B31G, RSTRENG and LPC. These methods were derived based on experimental tests and theoretical/numerical studies of the failure behavior of corroded pipelines subjected only to internal pressure loading. In the vast majority of cases, internal pressure loading will be the main loading mechanism on the pipeline. However, there may be instances when pipelines could also be subjected to significant loading from the env
