Abstract:
Social health protection systems are constantly evolving, offering a wide range of institutional, administrative, and financial arrangements. International standards in social health protection are outcome-based, and grant flexibility in the institutional and administrative arrangements chosen by each state to implement these guarantees, as long as certain fundamental principles are upheld. These principles include the establishment of state-guaranteed benefit entitlements, solidarity in financing, and broad risk pooling. Abstract:
The practice of universal design―of making a product or environment accessible to all individuals―has been around for a long time. But, until now, that practice has never been explored in depth in the field of physical education. This groundbreaking text provides a much-needed link between universal design and physical education, extending boundaries as it offers physical educators a systematic guide to create, administer, manage, assess, and apply universal design for learning (UDL). This book develops a minimalist approach to cross-linguistic morphosyntactic variation. The principal claim is that the essential insight of the principles-and-parameters approach to variation can be maintained—albeit in a somewhat different guise—in the context of the minimalist programme for linguistic theory. The central idea is to organize the parameters of Universal Grammar (UG) into hierarchies which define the ways in which properties of individually variant categories and features may act in concert. The hierarchies define macro-, meso-, and microparameters as a function of the positio

The contributions in this section reveal the constitutional design of Sweden. Considering the number of fundamental laws and the length of the Instrument of Government (IG), the impression might be that constitutional principles are of great importance in Swedish political life. However, Swedish political culture is best described as pragmatic and consensual, where the government’s ability to take action has been given deliberate precedence over constitutional ideas that focus on limiting government under higher law. Furthermore, from a constitutional design perspective, Sweden is an interesti

Millions of Americans lack health insurance, and thousands suffer and die every year. Philosophers have argued that an ideal society would avoid these problems by guaranteeing affordable access to health insurance, but what about people’s concerns that a universal health insurance system would be inefficient, create excessive fiscal risk, or impose high taxes and other personal costs? This book examines the ethical issues raised by these objections. It shows that the ethical principles underlying these concerns are legitimate and that they might even justify opposition to poorly designed unive

Charles Travis seeks to forge a concord between Frege, McDowell, and Chomsky. The three thinkers all profoundly reject empiricism in the guise of rejecting of what Travis calls the Martian Principle. The essence of this principle is that thinking (or a cognitive competence) must be universal in not being due to a ‘special design’ a creature might have such that it exercises its competence in the way it does, as opposed to some other conceivable way. Although uncovering the Martian Principle is a genuine insight, Chomsky’s rejection of it is somewhat different from how Travis presents the case.

This book examines the operation of the rule of law in the non-liberal democracy of Singapore. The rule of law in Singapore has been both lauded for anchoring efficient and effective government and lambasted for being procedural and statist. 21st-century Singapore has experienced modest political liberalisation, manifesting a paternal democracy where the governor-governed relationship is evolving, from a ‘father knows best’ paternalistic mindset to a more consultative approach to governance, where dialogue rather than diktat is the norm in a post-deferential era. This book challenges the near-universal acceptance of a US-style, Western constitutional paradigm as the best basis for comparative constitutional studies. It does so on three main grounds: anachronism, ‘othering’ and cultural specificity. Main pillars of ‘convergent constitutional theory’ are rooted in the revolutionary, late-eighteenth century – a lost world; constitutional arrangements that deviate from the paradigm are often branded as ‘outliers’ or even as not constitutional at all; and the foundations of the paradigm in liberal democracy give no space for other forms of constitutionalism

As China has transformed itself from a centrally planned economy to a market economy, economists have tried to understand and interpret the success of Chinese reform. As the Chinese economist Yingyi Qian explains, there are two schools of thought on Chinese reform: the “School of Universal Principles,” which ascribes China’s successful reform to the workings of the free market, and the “School of Chinese Characteristics,” which holds that China’s reform is successful precisely because it did not follow the economics of the market but instead relied on the government.
