This article chronicles the milling of wheat beginning with its cultivation about ten thousand years ago. It describes the milling of the grain, starting with primitive hand tools, progressing to larger mills, then the use of animal power to turn milling stones. Changes in the design of the mills made them more efficient. Using flowing water to turn the millstone greatly increased output; people without access to flowing water devised mills turned by the wind. As wheat became a more important crop, an automated system, using elevators and gravity chutes, made it possible to mill even more grai

Recovery of fish after implementing better management of effluent or following the closure of pulp mills is not well studied. Results from existing studies suggest the predominant responses observed during the operation of mills would predict a pathway of recovery, but this hypothesis has not been tested at mills with variable effects on fish. Multiple studies done at a mill in northern Ontario showed variable responses in white sucker (Catostomus commersoni), including effects on reproductive endpoints. AbstractAs water mills are quickly disappearing throughout Turkey, it is becoming very difficult to collect information about this type of ancient technology. By means of an ethno-archaeological study carried out in the territory of ancient Sagalassos (Pisidia), the very limited remains of 15 water mills were recorded. Following the recent introduction of electric mills, water mills have lost their previous importance and today some of the mill houses are used as stables or shelters. This work aims to suggest that many of the mills still extant today in fact date from an earlier period. Water mills and charcoal pits have constituted two of the main economic factors of the Tuscan Apennine mountains. Between the 12th and 15th centuries, they were used by noble powers and rural communities, thus being the protagonists of fundamental economic activities, such as milling (wheat and chestnuts) and siderurgy. Therefore, the analyzed sites nearby Raggiolo and Pratovecchio Stia (Casentino) are relevant case studies to understand the dynamics of the medieval mountain economic systems.

Johns and Emery Valleys are in south-central Utah, about 20 miles (32 km) southeast of Panguitch in Garfield and Kane Counties, and have a population of about 360 residents. However, Bryce Canyon National Park forms the southeastern boundary of the study area and tourist visitation to the park and the valleys reaches the millions annually. Water resource development and water quality concerns in this seasonally overpopulated area have prompted our comprehensive study of groundwater in Johns and Emery Valleys. This report presents a new estimate of valley-fill thickness; six valley-fill cross s

Abstract:
This work is an extension of a program reported in 1984 to establish factors which control corrosion of API line pipe in gas containing carbon dioxide and water. In this phase of the program, there were four objectives. One was to establish the temperature of maximum corrosion in the range of 75, 100 and 175F at 1000 psi in water saturated with carbon dioxide at partial pressures of 15 and 50 psia. The next was to explore the role of carbon content and microstructure in the steel, iron carbonate film formation, and resulting corrosion rates. The third was to examine the role of pre-existing

Abstract:
The Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River (UPDE) unit of the National Park Service partnered with the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University (ANS) to perform a freshwater snail inventory within the park. ANS and UPDE teams conducted field research in July and August of 2022 and 2023 using a combination of kick-net sampling and hand-picking methods to determine the abundance and diversity of freshwater snail populations. Fifty-four sites were surveyed along the 73 miles of the Delaware River within UPDE and included cold-water and warmwater fisheries zones. In 2022, field colle

Utilizing trace element or stable isotope analysis has proven to be an effective means to characterize early life history and large-scale movement patterns in fishes. Target species are assessed for analyte concentrations occurring in calcified hard structures and compared to signatures noted from associated watersheds. Our objective was to establish a trace element signature profile for major tributaries occurring within the Mississippi River Valley (MRV). Unfiltered water samples were obtained from 49 stations from Dubuque, IA downstream to Gramercy, LA (1387 river miles) from July through D

Abstract:
Flood related channel bed erosion, bank migration, and channel avulsions can represent a significant threat to pipeline integrity. Because there is well over 100,000 miles of liquid petroleum pipelines across the United States, the number of pipeline water crossings at risk from potential flood related forces is equally large. However, the vast majority of these pipeline water crossings are located on small rivers and streams that do not represent a significant threat to pipeline integrity. Conversely, understanding which rivers have the potential to impact pipeline integrity is critical for p
