There is increasing evidence that cAMP promotes the relaxation of the myometrium, and other types of smooth muscle via the activation of cAMP-dependent protein kinase and other intracellular signalling pathways. The data from the first part of this study show that cAMP reduces the expression of most of the labour-associated gene, such as oxytocin receptor (OTR) (via PKA) and FP receptor. Interestingly, cAMP induces COX-2 expression via MAPK pathway. Therefore, with the exception of the COX-2 data, these findings suggest that cAMP agonists have the potential to be effective tocolytic agents. Mo

Abstract:
Introduction: Preterm labour occurs in 76,000 women in England and Wales each year and accounts for 75% of neonatal mortality. Infection and inflammation are key triggers of preterm labour. The transcription factor NF-ĸB plays a key regulatory role in the expression of the labour associated genes such as COX-2, prostaglandins and MMPs, as well as pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-8, IL-1β, IFN-γ and TNF-α. The anti-inflammatory prostaglandin 15-deoxyΔ-12,14 Prostaglandin J2, a CRTH2 agonist can inhibit NF-ĸB and delay preterm labour in a murine model of inflammation induced preterm labour.

Abstract:
Cocoa farming in West Africa has a long history of relying on family labour, including children’s labour. Increasingly, global concern is voiced about the hazardous nature of children’s work, without considering how it contributes to their social development. Using recent research, this paper maps out the tasks undertaken by boys and girls of different ages in Ghana and how their involvement in work considered hazardous has changed. We show that actions to decrease potential harm are increasingly difficult and identify new areas of inquiry.

Abstract:
The Nordic Council of Ministers’ vision is for the Region to be the most sustainable and integrated region in the world by 2030. Cross-border labour market mobility in the Nordic Region will play an important role in achieving that goal. In this working paper, we share the latest data on labour market mobility across national borders in the Nordic Region in the form of both migration and commuting. We also present findings from a review of current literature on labour market mobility in the Nordic Region and present an analytical framework for exploring potential improvements to it. The workin

Women remain underrepresented in the labour market. In the EU, they earn 14,1% less than men, and they still experience barriers to access and remain at the labour market (Eurostat, 2021a). Currently, the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the gender dimension of social and economic inequalities, producing a severe gender impact and the risk of economic marginalisation of women. Why do we expect the social and solidarity economy to improve gender equality at work? Therefore, the paper will discuss the potential and limits of the SEEs in promoting gender equality and women's empowerment. The ana

Abstract:
A universal basic income (UBI) is defined as a universal, unconditional cash payment that is made regularly, is sufficient to live on, is not means tested, carries no work requirements and is paid on an individual basis. This study examines the international evidence on universal basic incomes and identifies key issues for consideration in the design of any UBI pilot for Ireland. Despite the mainstream interest in UBI as a potential policy tool, relatively little is known about the associated consequences of such policies. Even the definition of a UBI appears to be poorly understood and is oft

Abstract:
Despite decades of interventions aiming to reduce child labour, children’s engagement with exploitative work remains widespread, particularly in South Asia. Emerging evidence about cash transfer programmes point towards their potential for reducing children’s engagement with work, but knowledge is scarce in terms of their impact on exploitative work and in urban settings. One component of the CLARISSA programme is to trial an innovative ‘cash plus’ intervention and to learn about its potential for reducing children’s harmful and hazardous work in two slum areas in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
