General rules

Chicago Style – author-date (17th ed.) offers different formats of bibliographic references for different periodicals. To create a reference to a newspaper article, use the following template:

Author. Year. "Article Title." Newspaper Title, publication date. URL (if applicable).

Omit the grammatical article 'The' at the beginning of the newspaper title: The New York Times → New York Times.

If the author of a newspaper article is not credited, put the newspaper title at the beginning of the reference:

Newspaper Title. Year. "Article Title." Publication date. URL (if applicable).

Do not include the volume number, issue number, or range of pages in the reference (for more details, see this article).

To reference an article published in a scholarly journal, use the templates described here; for a magazine article, use the same template as for a newspaper article.
