Rules for crediting authors in bibliographic references

In accordance with the requirements of IEEE Style, the names of authors are put in the beginning of a bibliographic reference: before the title of the source and the other elements. An author’s name is given as their initials followed by the last name (surname).

Initials Last Name

N.B. The initials should always precede the surname.

N.B. The initials include both the first name and the middle name (patronymic, etc.) if these elements are known from the source.

The name of an organisation or another corporate entity acting as an author is given similarly in the beginning of the reference.

Examples of references for sources with one author:

E. A. Elnashar , “Applications of mechatronics opportunities in textiles,” Int. Robot. Automat. J., vol. 8, no. 1, pp. 9–16, Jan. 2022, doi: 10.15406/iratj.2022.08.00237. Accessed: Feb. 21, 2023. [Online]. Available: https://medcraveonline.com/IRATJ/applications-of-mechatronics-opportunities-in-textiles.html

Electrical Safety Authority, “Annual report 2021/2022,” Electrical Safety Authority, Mississauga, ON, USA, 2022. Accessed: Feb. 21, 2023. [Online]. Available: https://esasafe.com/assets/files/esasafe/pdf/Corporate_Reports/ESA-AR2022-FINAL.pdf

IEEE Style requires giving the names of up to 6 authors. The name of each author is separated by a comma, and the name of the last author is separated by the conjunction ‘and’:

C. A. Gross and T. A. Roppel, Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering. Boca Raton, FL, USA: CRC Press, 2012.

Y. Yamada, T. Sakamoto, T. Matsui, and N. Araki, “Standardization activities for optical fiber and cable technology in International Electrotechnical Commission,” NTT Tech. Rev., vol. 20, no. 10, pp. 82–86, Oct. 2022, doi: 10.53829/ntr202210gls. Accessed: Feb. 21, 2023. [Online]. Available: https://ntt-review.jp/archive/ntttechnical.php?contents=ntr202210gls.html

For a source with more than 6 authors, give only the first author’s name followed by ‘et al.’ in italic font:

J. S. Cisneros et al., “Electrochemical impedance biosensor for Chagas Disease diagnosis in clinical samples,” Biosensors Bioelectronics: X, vol. 12, p. 100261, Dec. 2022, doi: 10.1016/j.biosx.2022.100261. Accessed: Feb. 21, 2023. [Online]. Available: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2590137022001546?via%3Dihub

The names of editors, translators, and other contributors should only be given if no data is available on the source’s author. The names of such contributors are given similarly in the beginning of the reference, together with their role separated by a comma:

G. Riva, B. K. Wiederhold, and P. Cipresso, Eds., The Psychology of Social Networking, vol. 1, Personal Experience in Online Communities. Warsaw, Poland: De Gruyter Open Poland, 2015, doi: 10.1515/9783110473780. Accessed: May 31, 2021. [Online]. Available: https://www.degruyter.com/document/doi/10.1515/9783110473780/html

Rules for crediting authors in in-text citations

In the text of your paper, given the names of only one or two authors. Should the cited work have more than two authors, give the first author’s name followed by ‘et al.’. See more in the article on in-text citations in IEEE Style.
