In June 2025, the new – 22nd – edition of The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation was published. The newest edition of the world’s most reputable style manual for legal sciences covers the various aspects of legal citation and provides a comprehensive guide on referencing different types of sources in academic work.

Bluebook 22nd ed. footnote generator by Grafiati

As early as on June 30, 2025, Grafiati launched its state-of-the-art reference generator for the Bluebook style 22nd ed. Just as our previous citation tool for The Bluebook, the newest footnote generator covers the requirements of the Whitepages (Law Reviews), i.e. the requirements imposed by the manual on legal citation in academic publications.

While we still maintain a compromise for legal sources (being an international service, we are currently forced to adapt the Bluebook citation of court cases and laws to a common scheme instead of following strictly the rules developed solely for the US users), we achieve maximum accuracy in citing various secondary sources (books, journals, dissertations, etc.).

What’s new in the 22nd edition?

The newest edition of The Bluebook focuses more on the citation of online sources. For the first time, the manual provides instructions on citing correctly generative AI. In addition, some of the core rules have changed as well, e.g. the number of author names to be included in footnotes.

These new rules are effectively covered by our referencing algorithms. In addition, we still maintain the code for Bluebook 21st and 20th editions for your convenience.
