The 13th edition of Cite Them Right: The Essential Referencing Guide, published by Bloomsbury Publishing, has just been released—and we’re excited to announce that Grafiati now supports the updated referencing rules across our platform.

Cite Them Right is one of the most widely used citation guides in academic settings, offering clear instructions for multiple referencing styles. Our focus is on the Harvard style, meticulously presented in the book by Richard Pears and Graham Shields.

Since Grafiati previously supported the 12th edition of the Harvard Cite Them Right style, we’re in a good position to highlight the key updates introduced in the 13th edition:

  • Main update: The requirement to include the place of publication in references to books, conference proceedings, and similar sources has been removed. The guide now recommends citing only the publisher, unless the location is essential to identifying the publisher (e.g., in early printed works).
  • Expanded coverage of digital sources: The new edition includes citation rules and examples for a wider variety of online materials. One such category is artificial intelligence, recently added to Grafiati as well. The manual includes examples for citing different types of AI-generated content, including text, images, music, video, and code.
  • Minor change for journal articles: For journals where each article is assigned an individual number, the guide now simplifies formatting by using just “article” instead of “article number.”

All other citation rules remain consistent with the 12th edition, with no major changes.

At Grafiati, you can generate your Harvard references according to both the 12th and 13th editions of Cite Them Right, quickly and accurately. Our platform supports a wide range of source types, including academic publications (books, journal articles, theses, conference papers, legislation, reports, preprints), as well as digital formats such as social media posts, podcasts, images, videos, webpages, and AI-generated content.
